Switzerland 0-2 England: How Roy Hodgson's side rated

Wayne Rooney was installed as England captain following Steven Gerrard's international retirement earlier this summer

England began their qualification campaign for Euro 2016 with a 2-0 win away to Switzerland - arguably their toughest fixture in Group E.

Arsenal's Danny Welbeck, who took the place of the injured Daniel Sturridge in the starting line-up, scored both goals, but the Swiss came close to finding the net themselves in an entertaining encounter.

Who amongst Roy Hodgson's side impressed and who left themselves in danger of demotion?

JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) 8

Excellent night for England's number one. Made two excellent saves from Haris Seferovic at crucial times and his handling was secure throughout.

Ex-England full-back Danny Mills on BBC Radio 5 live: "Absolutely exceptional. His distribution put England on the breakaway two or three times and he made a fabulous save from Seferovic's shot in the first half, having had little to do beforehand."

JOHN STONES (RIGHT-BACK) 6

Everton's youngster - playing out of position at right-back - understandably stuck to playing it safe. One or two incorrect positional decisions and tired late on but one for the future and he will learn a lot from this.

Mills: "He looks like he is lacking a little self-belief, he needs to believe in himself a little bit more."

PHIL JONES (CENTRE-BACK) 5

Nowhere near convincing as an international-class central defender. Fortunate that Joe Hart rescued one first-half error and uncertain throughout.

Mills: "He seems to be caught on his heels an awful lot and that means that he looks sluggish when people are running at him."

Did you know? Jones was making only his third competitive appearance for England and remains unbeaten with a win and two draws.

GARY CAHILL (CENTRE-BACK) 7

Vital contribution when he cleared off the line from Josip Drmic in the second half, after the Swiss striker had been allowed to play on, to ensure England stayed on level terms.

Mills: "His goal-line clearance after Josip Drmic rounded Joe Hart was true defending."

Did you know? Made more goal-line clearances in this game (one) than in his entire 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

LEIGHTON BAINES (LEFT-BACK) 7

Shaky start, but improved rapidly to make an impression in attack as well. Will do his confidence good after a spell of poor form.

Mills: "He looked a little uneasy. He didn't get his touch going in the first half."

FABIAN DELPH (MIDFIELDER) 7

Eventful full debut for Aston Villa's midfield man. Excellent on the ball but a real adventure off it. Could have been sent off in the first half but can be very satisfied with his contribution.

Mills: "He came into the game with a massive amount of adrenaline, which led to the early booking, but the energy he brings is great to see. He might make the odd mistake, but his energy is contagious."

Did you know? Completed all of his 26 passes in the first half, ending the game with a rate of 96%.

JACK WILSHERE (MIDFIELDER) 6

Solid night's work at the base of England's diamond. Never spectacular but played his part.

Mills: "I'm not sure about that holding role for Jack Wilshere."

JORDAN HENDERSON (MIDFIELDER) 6

Roy Hodgson said he was playing Henderson as an old-fashioned right-half, which is not designed to get the best out of him but the Liverpool midfielder got through his usual prodigious workload.

Mills: "He put in a good shift down the right and helped John Stones by providing plenty of cover."

RAHEEM STERLING (MIDFIELDER) 7

Crucial to England as manager Roy Hodgson must surely persist with this shape, using Sterling at the tip of a diamond. Pace, strength and a perfect cross for Danny Welbeck's first goal.

DANNY WELBECK (FORWARD) 8 - Man of the match

Guilty of choosing the wrong option when he wasted a first-half chance to shoot and delivered a poor cross instead, but made the vital contributions to get England off to a winning start with the two goals.

Mills: "He still had the energy and pace to get up the other end of the pitch in the 93rd minute and get his second."

WAYNE ROONEY (FORWARD) 7

Led from the front, worked hard and looked at home in England's formation, surrounded by strong runners and pace. Played a key part in Welbeck's first goal.

Mills: "Not perfect by any means, but he works very hard and produced a pass for Raheem Sterling for the first goal. I think it is ridiculous that people think he shouldn't be in the team."
