Leyton Orient: Confusion over Kevin Nugent job 'offer'

Leyton Orient have lost both League One matches since Kevin Nugent took caretaker charge

Caretaker boss Kevin Nugent says he has an offer to become Leyton Orient's head coach - a claim sporting director Mauro Milanese has dismissed as "a rumour".

He has been in charge of the League One side since the resignation of Russell Slade, who is set to take over at Championship club Cardiff City.

Nugent, 45, said after Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Swindon that there were "discussions going on" about the role.

But former QPR defender Milanese insisted the club is "in no rush".

"We trust Kevin because he coached with Russell Slade and he knows the players better than anyone else," the Italian told BBC London 94.9.

"He's got the personality to drive the team.

"We were 100% behind Russell and we were a bit unlucky that Cardiff wanted him. At the moment we'll stay with Kevin and hope he gets some results.

"We need to keep it more private. I don't know who said this [that Nugent has been offered the job] and I think sometimes rumours arrive.

"He wanted to have this chance and he preferred to stay [rather] than to follow Russell Slade.

Milanese continued: "We have a cup game on Tuesday, and we need one more week to think about it. We are in no rush. The results at the moment are not helping us to confirm the position."

Owner Francesco Becchetti, meanwhile, has been quoted in the local media giving his support to Nugent and wants him to remain in charge for the time being.

After overseeing a second consecutive defeat, Nugent told BBC London 94.9: "The club are looking at a different route with a head coach.

"I have been offered that role, but there's still discussions going on with it."
