Guernsey FC miss game after turning up for wrong flight

Guernsey FC's game at Carshalton Athletic on Saturday had to be postponed after the Channel Islands side turned up for the wrong flight.

The Green Lions were booked on the 07:00 BST flight to Gatwick, but turned up for the 08:30 flight instead.

"It was totally my error," said club secretary Mark Le Tissier, the brother of Southampton legend Matt.

"Being half-term, all the flights were booked and we couldn't get on another one," he added to BBC Radio Guernsey.

Guernsey have already struggled with midweek matches away from home as players find it difficult to get time off work, and it is likely that their Carshalton fixture will be another away trip which will be arranged for a Tuesday night.

"I apologise on behalf of myself and the club for the error," added Le Tissier, who is waiting to hear from the Isthmian League as to whether there will be any sanction against the club.

Carshalton secretary Chris Blanchard said Guernsey, who have to pay for opposing teams to come to the island as well as for their own travel when they go to England, deserved some sympathy.

"They did try very hard to make the game," Blanchard said.

"As a fellow secretary I have total sympathy for him, it must be an absolute nightmare for them. It's something that happens and we move on.

"I've spoken to Mark since the game was postponed and we'll rearrange for a date as soon as we can."
