Hartlepool: Scott Fenwick sets example, says Sam Collins

Hartlepool United defender Sam Collins has said the League Two bottom side needs to show the fight of striker Scott Fenwick to avoid relegation.

Fenwick, 24, scored his first Football League goal in Saturday's 3-1 loss against York City, having joined Paul Murray's men from non-league side Dunston UTS earlier this month.

Pools' fifth loss in six league games leaves them six points from safety.

"Scott is a fighter. He is what we need," Collins told BBC Tees.

"He wants to fight, he wants to have a go. He has come from non-league and is keen and wants to do well."

Collins said he believed there was more to come from former Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland academy player Fenwick after he netted in his first Football League start.

"The biggest thing, more than anything else, is that he knows where goal is," Collins said. "He knows where to be.

"It is a big positive for us, we need to look after him, get him fitter. He is only a young kid really, he has a lot learning to do but he could be massive for us."

Collins, who admitted he was to blame for Saturday's defeat after failing to stop Keith Lowe for both his goals, said a strong resolve would be the most important quality as Pools looked to climb off the foot of the Football League.

"It is not going to be pretty football that gets us out of this situation, it is people who want to fight and win, and who are determined," he added.

"We need people that are going to throw their head in front of a brick wall."
