Steve McClaren: Derby boss unflattered by Newcastle link

McClaren has led the Rams to third in the Championship thanks to 13 wins and six draws from their 24 league games

Derby County head coach Steve McClaren has said he is no longer flattered by being linked with top management roles.

"I'm past all that," said McClaren, who has been tipped to succeed Alan Pardew as Newcastle manager. "I used to [be flattered] when I was younger."

St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier has also been linked with the job.

But the 48-year-old Frenchman said: "I have a commitment to my club and my players. I am and will be the coach until the end of the season."

Ex-England manager McClaren has again distanced himself from a move to St James' Park, despite the odds on him taking over at the Premier League side continuing to shorten.

"I realise it is part of the game, but it's pure speculation," McClaren said.

"Derby are doing well, playing good football, are near the top of the Championship and challenging again."

The Rams, who reached the play-off final last season, are third in the table following back-to-back wins over Birmingham City and Leeds United.

McClaren, 53, told BBC Radio Derby: "We have a job to do here and are in a very good position. I believe we will be challenging for a place in the Premier League. That is my job and that is what I am concentrating on.

"Over the Christmas period we have got back to where we should be after a tough week against Middlesbrough, Chelsea and Norwich."
