Ronny Deila eyes "historic" Celtic win over Inter Milan

Deila's side are still involved in four competitions this season

Celtic manager Ronny Deila says his team will need to produce their best performance of the season to secure an "historic" win over Inter Milan.

The sides drew the first-leg of the Europa League last-32 tie 3-3 at Celtic Park, and Deila says his men can win at the San Siro if they hit top form.

"If we have our best performance of the season, and have a little bit of luck with us, we have a chance, "Deila said.

"If we can get an historic win here it will be the moment of our lives."

Despite the defensive shortcomings that resulted in his side conceding three soft goals in the first-leg, Deila saw enough in the Celtic performance to give him confidence that they can emerge from the tie with a famous victory.

"It's going to be a tough game of course," the Celtic boss commented.

"We need to win here, but everything is possible in football. In my opinion, we have everything to win now and we're going to go for that victory to go through.

"We created lots of chances and scored three goals last time, so we have to continue getting Inter Milan troubled, but we have to defend in a better way."

Deila believes if his side do overcome Inter, they will have to be considered among the contenders to win the competition.

"If we beat Inter Milan, then you've shown you can beat anybody, so that would give us very good confidence.

"I believe in the next round everything is possible."

Gary Mackay-Steven made his Parkhead debut in the first-leg following his move from Dundee United, and he is relishing the chance to perform in Milan's San Siro.

"It's an iconic stadium and Inter Milan are a massive club, but so are Celtic," said the 24-year-old.

"We're here not to be tourists but to do a job, and that's to get a result.

"It's going to be a very difficult test for us but we're going into the game with confidence. "

On the day Celtic were fined £7,300 by Uefa following crowd disturbances during their Europa League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb, Deila said the atmosphere against Inter Milan showed the club's fans at their best, and that a small troublesome element of the support must be eradicated.

"You saw last Thursday what Celtic fans can be," the former Strømsgodset boss said.

"The atmosphere in the stadium was unbelievable. That's something to be proud of.

"We have a good support all over Europe when we are playing there, and 99% of them act and behave in a very good way.

"Sadly we have 1%, some people that haven't and make us problems. It's so important for us in the future that we stop this."
