Morgan Schneiderlin says Southampton can make top four

Schneiderlin has scored three Premier League goals for Southampton this season

Southampton can still finish in the Premier League's top four this season, says midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Saints are winless in their last three matches and have slipped out of the top four for the first time since December.

They host in-form Crystal Palace on Tuesday and Schneiderlin, 25, is confident of a turnaround.

"We still want to finish as high as possible - which means the top four. We still have the capacity to do it," Schneiderlin, 25, said.

The Frenchman told BBC Radio Solent: "There's a lot of expectation, after we beat Manchester United, that we could finish in the top four but we are not giving up on this.

"We have been in the top five since August - so why not?"

Schneiderlin says he has recovered from his recent injury problems and determined to help the club, who are now sixth in the Premier League, rekindle their winning form against Palace and prove the critics wrong.

"Now is the time to see the character of the team and everyone to take responsibility and show what we can do," he said.

"Other teams have more experience and are used to this type of pressure. People are not expecting Southampton to be in the top four."

Southampton have scored just one goal in their last five games but Schneiderlin says it is not just forward Graziano Pelle who should take on the burden of responsibility.

He also suggested their form in the first half of the season had perhaps led to over-confidence among the squad.

"We maybe thought the goals would come naturally and that made us work a bit less and [we were] not doing the right things," he said.

"It is not the problem of one striker or two wingers - it's the whole team. It's up to everyone to question why we have not scored."
