Rangers: Stuart McCall discounts 'nightmare' tie with Motherwell

Stuart McCall says it would be a "nightmare" if Rangers had to face his former club, Motherwell, in a play-off but does not think it will happen.

McCall's current side sit second top in the Scottish Championship, while Well are second bottom of the Premiership and could meet in a play-off final.

"It would be a nightmare if I'm honest," said the Rangers manager.

"It is not looking likely at all, because Motherwell aren't going to finish in the bottom two - I hope."

McCall, who had been at Fir Park for four years, resigned as Motherwell manager in November after a poor start to the season and took over as interim Rangers boss in March.

With Hearts having already clinched the title and the one automatic promotion spot, McCall's present side are in pole position to face either Hibernian, Queen of the South or Falkirk in a play-off.

The winner of that two-leg tie would play the second bottom side in the top flight in that play-off final.

"First and foremost, we've got to do our own job," said McCall.

"Our main thing is to be in those play-offs and be in the final against a Premiership side.

"We want to be there and, if we do get there, we play the 11th team and I genuinely believe it won't be Motherwell."

After initially struggling under Ian Baraclough, Motherwell have found form in recent weeks under McCall's successor and Tuesday's 5-0 win over bottom side St Mirren has all but consigned the Paisley side to relegation.

Well remain three points adrift of Ross County and a further point behind Partick Thistle.

However, McCall thinks the recent signing of former Celtic and Millwall striker Scott McDonald will be the key factor in ensuring Motherwell make up that gap.

"Nobody could have foreseen the Ross County run - outstanding what they've done," he said.

"But I genuinely don't think and hope Motherwell are not in the bottom two.

"I think they've got a good enough quality in the dressing-room. They've got momentum, but it's going to be really interesting scrap at the bottom."
