Jersey Premiership: St Paul's draw 1-1 with Wanderers to retain title

St Paul's have won the Jersey Premiership for the second year running after a 1-1 home draw with Jersey Wanderers in their final game.

Kieran Lester put them ahead and though Kamen Nafkha levelled for Wanderers, a draw was enough for Paul Brannan's side to retain the title.

"I'm so happy for the players," Brannan told BBC Radio Jersey.

"They knew what was needed of them and they've been phenomenal from day one this year."

The Saints had been on course for a play-off for first place with nearest rivals Jersey Scottish until the runners-up were surprisingly beaten by St Ouen.

That result meant St Paul's only had to draw against third-placed Wanderers to get over the line, meaning a missed penalty did not end up costing them.

"When you know what result you need it makes it that little bit harder and they had us under a lot of pressure," added Brannan.

"Often people say these sort of runs go in cycles and I hope this is the start of a very long cycle (of success) for St Paul's."

Brannan has been mooted as a potential future manager of Jersey's football team and says it is something he would like to achieve.

"I think any young coach coming through the system of Jersey football would hold that as an aspiration," he said.

"Right now I'm completely focused on this league season, this club and this team - this is what I care about right now."
