Charlie Austin has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer has challenged Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin to try to beat his tally at Newcastle United.

Austin, 25, scored 18 times in his first season in the top flight and is expected to leave relegated QPR.

He has been linked with a move to Newcastle and on Monday tweeted:, external "260 Premier League goals! No one is catching Alan Shearer."

Shearer, who scored 206 goals over 10 years for the Magpies and is now a BBC pundit, replied:, external "Why don't you come up here and try?! #9".

Former Swindon and Burnley striker Austin, who joined QPR in 2013, is in the England squad for Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Slovenia.
