Louis van Gaal: Man Utd can beat Wolfsburg in Champions League

Louis van Gaal admits Manchester United face a difficult trip to Wolfsburg in their final Champions League group game on 8 December but has backed his side to win and reach the last 16.

United are a point behind the German group leaders following Wednesday's 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven.

United need a win to progress because they are just one point ahead of PSV, who have a better head-to-head record.

"Anything's possible. We can win anywhere," said Van Gaal.

"We have proved that in the Premier League and we must do it in the Champions League.

"We've made it hard for ourselves ahead of the last game but we'll go to Wolfsburg with hope."

United had the majority of possession against PSV at Old Trafford but were not sharp enough in attack and failed to truly threaten the Dutch side, who beat them 2-1 at the Philips Stadion in September.

Jesse Lingard missed their best chance, shooting over from the edge of the box in the second half, while Morgan Schneiderlin had a shot from close range saved following a first-half corner and Anthony Martial had a couple of shots saved.

"The result is disappointing because I think we could have finished this game several times in the first half and also in the second," said Van Gaal.

"We didn't play so well. In the first half it was average but in the second, despite my changes [bringing on Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata] it did not improve.

"Nevertheless, we only gave one chance away in the second half."

United have not conceded a goal in their last five home games but have only scored six in their last eight games anywhere and captain Wayne Rooney admitted after Wednesday's match that they needed to be more "ruthless".

"Of course I am worried, but I also know that goals are coming and going," admitted Van Gaal. "It is not a consequence of good or bad performances. Today, we could have scored three goals. The next game, we could score out of nothing. That is football."

United beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford at the end of September, with Juan Mata and Chris Smalling scoring the goals.

"Now we have to win in Wolfsburg, which is difficult, but our efforts in away games this year is better than last year," added Van Gaal, whose side have lost three times away from home this campaign.

"We won our home game against them, so why can we not win away?

"We are still second and in a qualifying position."

PSV host CSKA Moscow in their final group game. The Russian side are bottom of Group B having won just one of their five qualifying games, at home to PSV.
