'Goal was doubtful'

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says that the goal 'was doubtful' - he thought it was a foul against Nicolas Otamendi.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "We could have finished in the first half but also in the second half, to the end we're not so good any more, we were afraid to play the ball but nevertheless do not give too much chances away.

"The midfielders were dropping too much and that is why we didn’t support too much our front players. We have created in one half three open chances and there difficult chances.

"I cannot say every game in the interview with you that we didn’t finish but it is the truth.

"It will be very difficult because Wolfsburg are the best team in our group to play against, but it is possible.

"We have won also at home and PSV has to win against Moscow, it is not so easy."

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney: "It is a game we were capable of winning and we played some good stuff in the first half and we were unlucky not to go in up at the break. In the second half we showed a lack of composure so that was not great, overall a draw was probably fair but this is what we did not want.

"Going to Germany is always tough, we have to believe in ourselves and have confidence we can do that, it's not the way we wanted but that is the way it is and we have to believe we are good enough to get three points.

"We are not ruthless enough - we have to score more goals as a team, they were able to nearly hit us on the break a few times, a learning curve but we cannot go on saying that.We have to change these games into victories."

All over and Real Madrid survive in an utterly bizarre game. In the 76th minute they were 4-0 up and cruising to victory but Shakhtar Donetsk scored three goals in 11 minutes to set up a tense finish.

Real held on to record a 4-3 win and ensure they finish top of Group A, but that was almost too close for comfort.

Meanwhile, PSG take second in the group after winning 5-0 at Malmo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring against his former club.

But Aguero can't beat the wily old Gigi Buffon, whose angles are perfect, he doesn't give away a penalty and stands up and blocks Aguero's shot. Superb keeping.

Gareth Bale got ahead of the goalkeeper to lift in the cross and Cristiano Ronaldo adjusted himself quickly to head in from an awkward bounce. That's better from the hosts as Jesse Lingard shovels the ball down the line for Matteo Darmian, adding all the width on the right. He looks up and fires it in hard, early and low, PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet misses it and Wayne Rooney is almost in for a tap-in but a defender is there.

And that is why that Fernandinho miss was so costly - Juve score seconds later!

Paul Pogba starts it, ghosting past Kevin de Bruyne so easily before finding a man on the left. The cross comes in and Mario Mandzukic shrugs off Nicolas Otamendi to meet it on the volley and steer it home.

Otamendi thinks he was fouled but he needs to be stronger.

If you didn't know, Wolfsburg won in Moscow earlier this evening and they now top Group B.

As it stands United are second, a point behind, with PSV a further point back in third.

Manchester City lead Juventus by a point at the top of Group D and will confirm their place as group winners - and with it a seeding in the draw for the last 16 - with victory in Turin tonight.

If they do win the group they will avoid another group winner in the knockout stage.

"Everyone criticised this club about their performances in Europe," said Manuel Pellegrini. "So it's important for us to have achievements and one of those is to qualify for the last 16.

"Finishing top doesn't mean we'll get an easy draw as it depends on a lot of things."

Paris St-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he wants fans of his hometown club Malmo to sing his name when he returns tonight.

"A perfect scenario is that we win, I score three goals and everyone chants my name after the match," he said.

Ibrahimovic, 34, was born in Malmo and played for the club between 1999 and 2001.

Ibrahimovic has never before returned to Malmo to play a competitive game with a club side and, with tickets scarce, he arranged for the game to be shown on a big screen in the city's main square, Stortorget.

"When the draw was made, I called Malmo FF directly and said 'Book Stortorget,'" he said.

"It took a while, but then they called back and said it was booked. I want everyone to have a chance to see the game."

Wolfsburg have moved above Manchester United in Group B after two goals from substitute Andre Schurrle secured a 2-0 win at CSKA Moscow, who cannot progress to the knockout stages. 

Those goals also mean that CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev has now conceded in 36 Champions League games in a row. Maybe time to give someone else a crack in goal...

Meabnwhile, in Kazakhstan, Astana threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Benfica in a 15:00 GMT kick-off.

Nobody really knows what it means, but there's something satisfying about dropping in a new word into the football lexicon.

The Germans are the kings of the niche phrase. From the brilliant 'Raumdeuter' (Literally a space investigator - used to describe Thomas Muller's knack of finding space) to the sensational 'Anschlusstreffer' (Thegoal that reduces the deficit to one, eg brings the score to 2-1 rather than 2-0).

Could a player - previously unheralded - who goes on a massive scoring run be called 'a Vardy?'

South America has bought us the 'rabona' and the Italians 'Catenaccio', but we want you to think of your own.

They can be pun-based, a phrase you and your mates use and you can't remember why, a port from another sport/game/way of life, a mangling of Ronglish - whatever you like.

And perhaps most importantly, they can be for the most niche parts of the game, the little details that our language hasn't caught up with.

What do you call that free-kick that Ronaldo takes, right on the valve of the ball? Should there be a word for a mascot observing a minute's silence? Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is fit tonight but may not start, says manager Louis van Gaal.

Rooney trained on Tuesday after missing Saturday's 2-1 win over Watford with illness.

But asked if Rooney would regain his place in the XI, Van Gaal said: "No, not automatically."

Striker Anthony Martial is also fit, but midfielder Ander Herrera and defender Phil Jones are unavailable.

Marouane Fellaini, who also missed the Watford match, has recovered from a calf injury.

But Van Gaal said the Belgian midfielder, Martial and Rooney would have to "show on the training ground" that they deserved a starting place for the Group B match.
