Shrewsbury Town captain Liam Lawrence says Saturday's 7-1 thrashing by Chesterfield left him feeling "disgusted, embarrassed and upset".

Town's heaviest defeat for over half a century, since a 7-1 loss at Southend in April 1964, leaves them a point above the League One relegation zone.

"It's probably my worst day in football, result-wise," Lawrence, 34, told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"I'm disgusted and embarrassed for the fans. To lose 7-1 is so upsetting."

Shrewsbury conceded two penalties and had Junior Brown sent off in an afternoon to forget against the Spireites, who claimed their first win in any competition since early November.

"We didn't stick to the plan we worked on in training all week," added Lawrence. "We defended poorly, a sending off, two penalties. Add them up and it's some day at the office.

"To come off a win at Crewe, then come here and put in that performance, it's baffling. If I had enough money I'd pay for all the tickets. I am sorry. It won't happen again, that's for sure."
