  3. Zidane replaces Benitez at Real Madrid

    Football

    Chris Sutton

Former Chelsea & Norwich striker on Radio 5 live

"What is going to change under Zidane? However good they are going forward, they have a problem going back. It is OK having an attack-minded manager. How are you going to make Ronaldo go back or Benzema do the dirty side of the game?"

    Real Madrid sack Rafael Benitez

Samuel Pattison: Guardiola, Mourinho and now Benitez all looking for new jobs… exciting times!

Dean Bunnell: Football isn't always about results. There were clearly some internal problems with Benitez and the board didn't like it.

Sammitwum: I pity Zinedine Zidane because it'll take just three losses and five draws for him to be sacked as well.

  5. What about Mourinho?

    Football

    Saj Chowdhury

    BBC Sport

Real overlooked one of their notable former managers in turning to Zidane.

Jose Mourinho guided the club to the league title in 2012 and - following his sacking by Chelsea last month - is available.

He has unfinished business at the Bernabeu having failed to win the Champions League - a prize coveted perhaps more than any other by Los Blancos.

    Mourinho

But there were reports his relationship with forward Cristiano Ronaldo broke down during his last spell in charge, while he also had high-profile clashes with fan favourites Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas.

And following Mourinho's departure from Chelsea, Perez said there would be no imminent return to the Bernabeu for 'the special one'.

  6. What next for Benitez?

    Football

Rafael Benitez may be loved in Liverpool and Valencia, but his reputation as a manager has diminished in his past two jobs - at Napoli and Real.

The Spaniard replaced Walter Mazzarri as Napoli boss in May 2013, and won the Coppa Italia in his first season in charge, but things soured in his second and final season.

Napoli failed to make the Champions League despite the big-money signings of Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Maria Callejon, Raul Albiol and Dries Mertens, with Benitez criticised for his rotation policy and stubborn adherence to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

    Rafa Benitez

Real lost just three of their 25 competitive matches under Benitez, but the club's supporters quickly tired of what they regarded as a sterile and unexciting style of play.

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan said last month that Benitez was"two hours away" from being appointed Hammers boss before he took the Real job.

His trophy-laden CV map tempt other Premier League clubs to turn to a man whose family home is still on Merseyside.

It is an arm’s race. A manager who doesn’t win the European Cup is going to be looking over their shoulder. How long can these great clubs keep interchanging parts. The Galactico manager. Real Madrid sack Rafael Benitez

AJ Vergette: Absolute madness! Rafa was doing fine! Team turned against him, Perez proved egos are bigger than the club.

Christian Evans: Appointing Zidane as manager is just as much of a gamble as Valencia with Neville; no managerial experience at this level.

Jonathan Frayman: For amount Real Madrid have spent they have achieved so little. President must take some blame. Benitez deserved more time.

Jane Johnson: Zidane is a legend and will have the respect of the Real Madrid players, with whom the real power lies. Grooming him for ages.

    Real Madrid sack Rafael Benitez

Malcolm Jarrett: Benitez too defensive for Real Madrid. Liverpool were boring when he was there. Just got lucky winning the European Cup.

Jon Potter: Players definitely take some blame, behaviour of some appalling - not Rafa's fault Ancelotti was sacked. Chief culprit Perez.

Nicholas Taylor: Lose three games out of 25, four points off top, still in Champions League. Seems very harsh to sack Benitez.

Daniel Jones: Bring Rafa to the Cleveland Browns, we have a track record of mediocre managers!

He decided to sack Carlo Ancelotti when everyone loved him. They change Rafael Benitez but no-one is advising who is the right man to be there. Perez didn’t say anything about the change. Why? 15. Zidane replaces Benitez at Real Madrid

    Football

Zinedine Zidane has been coach of Real's B team - who are second in the Spanish third tier - since 2014. Prior to that he was an integral member of the backroom staff under then Real boss Carlo Ancelotti, who led the side to 'La Decima' - the club's 10th European Cup - in 2013-14.

During his playing career, the Frenchman was one of Real's key 'Galacticos' - a label given to the expensive players signed by club president Florentino Perez in the early to mid-2000s.

Real paid Juventus a then-world record fee of £45.8m in 2001 for the midfielder, who had already won the World Cup and European Championship.

    Zidane

At the Bernabeu he played alongside players such as Luis Figo, Raul and Ronaldo, and also featured in the same midfield as England captain David Beckham.

He helped the side win the Spanish league title in 2003 and won the Fifa World Player of the Year award for the third time that year.

But perhaps his defining moment came in the 2002 Champions League final, when he scored a stunning volley against Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park.

"I want to do my very best to ensure the club has a trophy at the end of the season. Tomorrow is when the work starts.

  69. Mark Hughes news conference

Stoke v Liverpool (League Cup semi-final, Tues 20:00 GMT)

    MA

He's responded to questions about the future of Bojan, now there's a query about another of his players who might be on the wanted list of other clubs - frontman Marko Arnautovic.

"The intention is to get Marko pinned down on a long term deal like Erik Pieters. It's just taking a little longer," says Hughes.

Which won't exactly ease the concerns of Stoke's fans.

And that's it, Hughes has headed off into the sunset, or at the very least into the gloomy Stoke-on-Trent evening.

Remember, the game kicks off at 20:00 GMT tomorrow and you'll find full live text commentary here on the BBC website.

  70. Mark Hughes news conference

Stoke v Liverpool (League Cup semi-final, Tues 20:00 GMT)

After beating Manchester United and Everton over the Christmas period, Stoke came unstuck at West Brom on Saturday, losing 2-1.

"We're frustrated by the result," says Hughes.

"We went into the game in good form and we just dipped below what we are capable of.

"We can't be too disappointed. We look back and take it into perspective. We have a big game tomorrow to bounce back with."

Stoke v Liverpool (League Cup semi-final, Tues 20:00 GMT)

"Liverpool will be aiming to bounce back from their defeat. It has everything to be a good semi-final and one we're looking forward to.," says Hughes.

"We don't want to go to Anfield no longer being in the tie. Our home form has been good. If we hit our levels, we can cause real problems "

The boss goes on to say that the fans at the Britannia can make a difference.

"The fans will play an important role," he says. "They raise the noise which can really affect opposing teams."

Massive game for Stoke tomorrow but it's not the match manager Mark Hughes asked about.

First question concerns Bojan Krkic and rumours that he has a £10m buy-out clause in his contract, which, with January under way, will no doubt put some of his admirers on alert.

"There's a lot of speculation on Bojan. There's a lot of misinformation about and there is no clause in his contract," he says very firmly.

"I take transfer speculation with a pinch of salt. I don't know where the stories come from and a lot come with no substance."

Manchester United's style of play has been criticised again - this time by their main sponsor.

The Old Trafford side signed a 10-year £750m sponsorship deal with sportswear giant Adidas last summer but chief executive officer Herbert Hainer has had his say in a German newspaper.

"Business with Man United is going very well, we sell more shirts than expected," he told Suddeutsche Zeintung.

"We are satisfied...even if the current playing style of Man United is not exactly what we want to see."

    Football

    Ian Kennedy

    Reporter, BBC Radio Merseyside Sport

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t been at Anfield very long, and he’s already seen the good and the bad that Liverpool can produce.

But he’s now reached a semi final, and while the League Cup may not be his major priority, it does give him a chance to take a team to Wembley and pick up some early silverware.

That could be crucial in setting in motion his long term managerial goals.

Stoke however are an excellent side. Klopp is well aware of that and in fact knows more about Stoke than most of the other teams he’s coming up against.

It should be a fascinating tie.

After he was dismissed for 41 off 15 balls when batting for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash, he was interviewed by TV presenter Mel McLaughlin

Gayle told a clearly uncomfortable McLaughlin that he got himself deliberately dismissed so that he could "look in your eyes".

"Hopefully we can win this game and have a drink after", he said, before finishing "Don't blush, baby".

However, the head of the Australian T20 league, Anthony Everard, said that Gayle's comments were "disrespectful and simply inappropriate", and that he would be speaking to Gayle about it.

Little wonder really, given he is storng and powerful and can hit the target too - scoring seven goals in 18 league starts.

"Arnautovic was young player in Germany who had some problems but he has a big talent. He's scoring goals, making runs behind lines," says Klopp.

No early joy for England in Cape Town.

South Africa have advanced to 156-2 after the first half-hour of play, with AB De Villiers on 34 and Hashim Amla 69.

  135. Frustration

    Everton 1-1 Tottenham

Another solid result for Tottenham then, but more frustration for Everton, whose fans had already witnessed successive home defeats by Leicester and Stoke.

Boss Roberto Martinez seemed fairly upbeat though, saying: "I feel satisfied. We saw two very good teams who want to play in a similar manner.

"We never lost the defensive intensity. It is not something we have had at home and it has cost us points, but my players were immense in that respect.

"They just could not find the final pass in certain moments when maybe they could get the winning goal."

  136. 'He looks the complete package'

    Everton 1-1 Tottenham

    Phil McNulty

Dele Allisigned by Spurs from MK Dons, has been the source of real excitement this season. It was easy to see why at Goodison Park as the tall, athletic midfield man looked the complete package and a player who has a golden future for club and country.

The 19-year-old showed he was prepared to mix it in the physical exchanges before growing into the game, showing superb technique to control Toby Alderweireld's long pass and slide a composed, precise finish past Tim Howard.

    Alli

And what will prove of real interest to England manager Roy Hodgson, as well as Pochettino of course, is that Alli appears to have forged a natural link with Harry Kane.

The pair looked dangerous when Alli pushed into forward positions - a partnership that should bring rich rewards for Spurs and England in the future.

  137. England star in the making

    Everton 1-1 Tottenham

    Dele Alli

Roy Hodgson must have been purring after watching Dele Alli's display in Tottenham's 1-1 draw at Everton on Sunday.

Ali must surely be a cert to make Hodgson's England squad for the Euro's after turning in yet another eye-catching performance at the heart of Spurs midfield.

He levelled after Aaron Lennon struck against his former club to give the Toffees the lead.

Alli has scored or assisted six goals in his past seven Premier League appearances - three goals, three assists - while Spurs are unbeaten in their past nine top-flight games on the road.

  138. 'We're back' - Terry

    Palace 0-3 Chelsea

    JT

Chelsea players "let everybody down" by starting the season so poorly, according to captain John Terry.

"It's unfortunate what's happened," Terry said, referring to Mourinho's exit. "We feel like we've let everyone down."

The Blues moved up to 14th in the table with victory at palace, but remain a massive 19 points behind leaders Arsenal.

"We are where we are, and slowly climbing the Premier League table," added Terry. "Guus has come in, picked things up and we've had to go again."

  139. Travel-sickness cured?

    Palace 0-3 Chelsea

Chelsea's away form in the first half of the season has been dire, with just six points collected on their travels. Only bottom two clubs Aston Villa and Sunderland have fared worse.

In beating seventh-placed Palace for their first away win since August, the Blues made a convincing case that the second half of the season might be more fruitful.

The one disappointment for Hiddink was the injury to Eden Hazard, which ended the Belgian's match after just 15 minutes.

Before the match Hiddink had said last year's player of the season was "back in shape".

  140. 'I'll never play like that again'

South Africa v England (Second Test)

    Ben Stokes

Don't forget that the cricket starts at 08:30 GMT. There is live text coverage right here, while on Sportsday we will bring you regular updates throughout the day.

South Africa - one behind in the series lest we forget - are 141-2 replying to England's whopping first innings total of 629-6.

Ben Stokes was the main reason for that - reaching 200 off 163 balls, the fastest double century by an Englishman and the second fastest ever.

"I probably won't play like this ever again in my life, but I've done it once so at least I can say that," said a rather delighted Stokes, who had made only one fifty in his previous 13 innings.

  141. Back on track

    Palace 0-3 Chelsea

Guus Hiddink has never labelled himself the Special One but he appears to be doing what Jose Mourinho couldn't - making Chelsea a force to be reckoned with again.

Goals from Oscar, Willian and Diego Costa secured a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace, a game that, on paper, had looked a tricky one.

    Chelsea

Interim boss Hiddink, who guided Chelsea to third in the Premier League, a Champions League semi-final and the FA Cup in his first spell at the club, remains unbeaten since taking over from Jose Mourinho last month.

The Blues' four-match run without defeat is their longest this season and moves last year's champions to 14th in the league, still 13 points adrift of a Champions League spot.

  142. Plan of action

Now then, we know you're busy folk and you like to plan your day, so here's what is coming up and when.

Day three of the second Test between England and South Africa kicks off at 08:30 GMT, while Andy Murray is back on a tennis court for the first time in 2016 from 09:30 in the Hopman Cup. Heather Watson is also in action.

Incidentally, want to see a picture of Andy Murray holding a koala bear?

    Thought so.

We've also press conferences from Mark Hughes and Jurgen Klopp - Stoke meet Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday (it's Everton-Man City the following night).

And now, without further ado, a look at the Premier League, including a resurgent Chelsea...

Loads going on today - League Cup semi-final press conference, Andy Murray's in action, England will continue to give South Africa a good walloping (nothing like tempting fate)...
