Former Bulgaria defender Trifon Ivanov dies at age of 50

Trifon Ivanov helped Bulgaria to a World Cup semi-final in 1994

Former Bulgaria defender Trifon Ivanov has died at the age of 50.

He played 76 times for his country, helping Bulgaria reach the World Cup in 1994 and 1998 and qualify for the European Championship in 1996.

The centre-back's playing career included spells at CSKA Sofia, Real Betis and Rapid Vienna.

"Trifon Ivanov will remain in the history of Bulgarian football as one of the best defenders," a Bulgarian Football Union statement said.
