Dave Tarpey: Maidenhead United striker breaks National League South goal record

Dave Tarpey had scored four goals in a game twice and bagged one other hat-trick so far this season

Maidenhead United striker Dave Tarpey has set a new record for most goals scored in a National League South season as his side bid for promotion.

Tarpey, 28, has netted 35 times for the Magpies this campaign beating Adam Birchall's previous record of 34 for Dover Athletic in 2010-11.

"It's a great achievement personally, but the team is more important," Tarpey told BBC Radio Berkshire.

Maidenhead are one point clear at the top of the league with nine games left.

"Three points is all that matters currently," Tarpey said, after scoring twice in Maidenhead's 3-1 victory at Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday.

"It's nice to break the goal-scoring record, but the main focus is keeping us top and hopefully getting promoted.

"We've just got to expect Ebbsfleet will keep winning games and we've just got to go into every game knowing that if we keep winning, we'll win the league."

Maidenhead, managed by former West Ham winger Alan Devonshire, will play Ebbsfleet - currently second in the table and their main challengers for automatic promotion - at home in the penultimate game of the season in a potential title decider.
