Coventry City 1-0 Port Vale

  • Published

Jodi Jones' stunning first-half strike earned Coventry City a narrow League Two win at home to struggling Port Vale.

Jones curled in the only goal as promotion hopefuls City picked up a first win in four attempts, while Vale's fifth straight league defeat relegated them to the foot of the table.

It should have been a much more emphatic victory after the in-form Jones fired in his fourth goal of the season from the edge of the box after 24 minutes, but the Sky Blues failed to convert a number of second-half chances.

Antony Kay was inches away from equalising for Vale when he thumped a header against the crossbar.

But Michael Doyle and Liam Kelly both went close for Coventry at the start of the second half, before Kelly headed over, while Stuart Beavon and Doyle again came close.

City were left clinging on in the final nine minutes after Rod McDonald was sent off for a lunging tackle on David Worrall. But goalkeeper Lee Burge saved well to deny Marcus Harness.
