New Bury manager Chris Lucketti says he "always hoped" his first job in management would be with the Shakers.
The 46-year-old made 235 league appearances for Bury between 1993 and 1999, helping them win promotion to the second tier in the 1996-97 season.
He was working as assistant manager at Scunthorpe, having previously been number two at Fleetwood.
"If I was going to get the opportunity to manage I wanted it to be Bury," he told BBC Radio Manchester.
"I hold the club in such high regard because of the time that I spent here and the success that we had.
"It's a club that I always cast an eye on, I always look for their results first and I had no hesitation.
"I always hoped that if I got this opportunity one day it would be at Bury football club."
Bury are currently bottom of the League One table, three points adrift of safety after 19 games.
"He's got a great experience of this level. People might say he's not been a manager, but he's been heavily involved in Scunthorpe's success," chairman Stewart Day said.
"I just also knew that he had a real passion for the football club, he understood what the football club was about, he's had great success here and he wants to bring that success back."
