Manchester City hammering 'won't define' Swansea season, says boss Paul Clement

Manager Paul Clement was critical of Swansea after their 4-0 thrashing by Manchester City - but says their season will not be defined by such matches.

The Swans are bottom of the Premier League table after being outplayed at home on Wednesday night.

League leaders City's win was their 15th in succession, a new record for the English top flight.

"They are one of the best sides I have ever come across," said former Real Madrid assistant boss Clement.

"It wasn't nice to see that from my point of view. If you're a Manchester City supporter it must be a pleasure to see that kind of football, but to be on the receiving end of a team playing like that against you is very difficult.

"We knew it was going to be a hard night. I would've liked it to have been closer, I would've liked my team to have played better but they are a really, really great side.

"Games like that aren't and won't define our season. It's other games and I include Everton away [on Monday] in that and absolutely Crystal Palace at home on the 23rd. That's really what we've got to focus on now."

Although City were close to their brilliant best at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday, they were helped by a submissive performance from Swansea.

They were timid defensively and unable to keep possession for long spells, inviting pressure and almost inevitably succumbing to a sixth defeat from nine Premier League home matches this season.

"We were very passive, showing too much respect, not aggressive enough. It was a tough evening," added Clement, who also worked as an assistant manager to Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain.

"We have had games when we've looked absolutely toothless and not looked like we're going to score, but we did get up in and around their goal a couple of times and I'm disappointed we didn't get on the score sheet.

"But that's another sign of a great side. They were desperate to keep a clean sheet, throwing bodies in front of the ball, great pride in their defending as well as their attacking.

"Fantastic. Up there from when I worked in Europe with Real Madrid, some of the teams we came up against. A really top side."
