Newport County's Mickey Demetriou scored an unfortunate early own goal

Oxford United progressed to the Carabao Cup third round as Newport County suffered a nightmare opening.

The League Two side's hopes of an upset were rocked just two minutes in, when Mickey Demetriou sliced Luke Garbutt's low cross into his own net.

Two minutes later Shandon Baptiste fired home from outside the box.

The League One visitors had James Hanson sent off for a lunge on Antoine Semenyo, but still added a late third as Gavin Whyte struck from close range.

Newport manager Mike Flynn told BBC Radio Wales:

"You can't start any game like that. It's tough to come back from that in any match and Oxford are a good team from the league above. It was a terrible, terrible start from us.

"Between the two areas I thought we did quite well, second half we were the better team and we were just chasing it at the end (when conceding the third goal).

"But we didn't really create too much and when we did we took the wrong options. It's frustrating because the way we started the game killed it off.

"It summed it up when they had a man sent off and we had to lose a player injured with no subs left, so it was 10 against 10, it topped the night off."
