FA Cup second round: Wrexham 0-0 Newport County

Wrexham had the best of the chances but were held to a goalless draw by Newport County in the FA Cup second round.

Despite the absence of manager Sam Ricketts, Wrexham started well at the Racecourse with new loan signing Bobby Grant forcing a fine save from Joe Day.

Stuart Beavon's lobbed effort was also heading for goal, before a last gasp clearance from Mickey Demetriou.

Newport, who will host the replay at Rodney Parade, saw Tyreeq Bakinson head over from their best opportunity.

Ricketts was asked to stay away amid speculation linking him with the vacant Shrewsbury Town role.

BBC Radio Shropshire are reporting that the former Wales defender is "close" to taking over at the League One club.

Wrexham are fourth in the National League and aiming to reach the third round for the first time since 2015, when they lost to then Premier League side Stoke City.

Newport, fourth in League Two, enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run last season, beating Leeds in the third round before taking Premier League club Tottenham to a Wembley replay.
