Welsh Cup: Bala put 17 goals past Brymbo in Welsh Cup

The Welsh Cup was first contested in the 1877-78 season.

Bala Town equalled the record for the biggest margin of vctory in the Welsh Cup tie with a 17-1 win over Brymbo.

Colin Caton's side matched Cardiff City's 16-0 win over Knighton in 1961 and Davenham's 16-0 victory over Holywell Reserves in the 1883-34 competition.

Chris Venables scored five and Bradley Bauress a hat-trick as the 2017 winners crushed the third tier Ardal North West side.

Llanrwst United, another Ardal North West team, lost 6-0 at Cymru Premier leaders The New Saints.

The Welsh Cup has made a welcome return this season after it was abandoned in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The second-round draw had thrown up a number of eye-catching David v Goliath clashes with the Football Association of Wales having introduced a seeding system for this round of the competition.

South Wales Alliance League Premier Division side Aber Valley, based in Abertridwr, had a sizeable away following for their game at top-flight Aberystwyth Town.

But the tier four side lost 9-0 against Antonio Corbisiero's team while Brecon Corries from the Mid Wales Football League East Division lost 6-0 away to Haverfordwest County.

Penrhyndeudraeth of the North Wales Coast West Football League Premier Division lost 5-0 at Flint Town United, while Berriew of the Ardal North East league lost 6-1 to top-flight local rivals Newtown.

Monmouthshire-based Ardal South East side Goytre lost 2-0 at Barry Town United and Cardiff Met were 1-0 winners at Pontardawe of the Ardal South West league.

On Friday evening Cymru Premier champions Connah's Quay Nomads secured their place in the third round of the Welsh Cup after a comfortable 5-0 win over fourth-tier side CPD Y Rhyl 1879.

CPD Y Rhyl 1879, who play in the North Wales Coast East Football League Premier Division, are a phoenix club formed after Rhyl FC - four-time winners of the competition - were dissolved due to financial problems in 2020.

But in a one-sided contest at Deeside Stadium, Byron Harrison, George Horan as well as a goal from Kris Owens and a Callum Morris penalty proved enough to seal victory for the 2018 Welsh Cup winners.

Caernarfon Town successfully navigated a tricky tie with a 4-0 win at third tier Ardal North West side Denbigh Town.

Cymru South Ammanford, featuring former Swansea City players Lee Trundle and Leon Britton, suffered a shock 3-0 home defeat by third tier outfit Penrhiwceiber Rangers while Trefelin BGC won 3-0 at fellow Cymru South side Briton Ferry,

In Friday evening's two all-Cymru North ties, Airbus UK Broughton won 2-1 at Llandudno while Colwyn Bay were 2-1 winners away to Gresford Athletic.
