James Waite's first Newport County goal was enough to secure victory against Bristol Rovers at Rodney Parade.

The 22-year-old fired home from outside the area after a surging run into the Rovers half with 33 minutes played.

Rob Street and Finn Azaz both hit the post for Newport, while Nick Townsend made a crucial double save to deny Aaron Collins equalising for Rovers.

Victories for Sutton and Northampton keep Newport a point outside the top three; Rovers slip a place to 10th.

Newport County manager James Rowberry said:

"I said to the lads 'it's unbelievable' but then I thought 'it's not unbelievable because it's believable.'

"The work they've put in and the way they've conducted themselves is incredible. I'm really proud of them.

"We'll enjoy tonight and then we focus on Stevenage."
