Partick Thistle moved to within three points of Queen's Park at the top of the Scottish Championship as they swept aside the leaders in the Glasgow derby.

Winger Scott Tiffoney set up defender Kevin Holt to steer in a back-post finish after a fairly even first half.

Queen's Park rarely looked like coming from behind to prevent Thistle moving above Ayr United into third place.

And Kyle Turner finished off a fine move, Danny Mullen scored on the turn, then Holt bundled in his second.

Queen's Park's third straight defeat means pre-season title favourites Dundee now have the chance to go two points clear at the top with a game in hand when they visit third-bottom Arbroath on Saturday.

Ayr can go back into third as they host five-placed Greenock Morton, but Thistle have revived their promotion hopes with four games remaining after losing just once in nine outings under Kris Doolan.

Queen's Park had long looked certain to finish above Thistle, who they had beaten in all three previous meetings this season, for the first time since 1935, but it is the Firhill side who now have the momentum.

Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan: "I am really proud of them. I think the first half was tight - nobody wanted to give anything too much away, but I thought second half we came out, we knew we had to win that game, we wanted to win the game.

"The numbers we committed forward to sore the goals was fantastic and we were so assured defensively. There is a real mentality that this place can go somewhere."

Queen's Park head coach Owen Coyle: "The second half was nowhere near good enough. You can lose a goal at any time, but what I'm looking for is a better reaction.

"To be honest, I'm standing here embarrassed by the scoreline. We need to be better than that and I can only apologise to the supporters and everyone involved with the club."
