Norwich City striker Hwang Ui-jo has been suspended by South Korea pending a police inquiry into claims he illegally filmed an ex-partner without consent.

The 31-year-old forward is accused of filming a sexual encounter with his former girlfriend on his phone and sharing it on social media.

Hwang, who played for Norwich against Watford on Tuesday and scored a goal in their 3-2 loss, denies the allegation.

The BBC understands the Championship club is aware of the allegations.

The Canaries will continue to monitor developments.

Hwang is on a season-long loan at Carrow Road from Premier League club Nottingham Forest, who declined to comment while the investigation is ongoing.

He played for South Korea in two World Cup qualifiers this month, scoring a penalty against Singapore, and was expected to be in the national team's squad for the Asia Cup in January.

But the Korea Football Association (KFA)'s ethics committee suspended him on Tuesday, pending the outcome of police investigations.

"We have decided not to select Hwang Ui-jo for the national team until a clear conclusion is reached on the facts," the committee said in a statement afterwards.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, a World Cup winner as a player, who also guided Germany to a third-place finish in 2006, said: "I fully understand the current situation and will respect the decision of the Korea Football Association."

Hwang joined Forest from French club Bordeaux in the summer of 2022 but has yet to play for their first team.

He had loan spells with Greek club Olympiakos and FC Seoul last season and has scored three goals in 14 appearances for Norwich since joining them on loan in the summer.

The Asian Cup kicks off in Qatar on 12 January, with South Korea opening their campaign against Bahrain three days later.
