Ayr United and Greenock Morton had to settle for a point apiece in a feisty Scottish Championship encounter.

Kirk Broadfoot's clever glancing header into the bottom corner from Michael Garrity's perfect free-kick gave the visitors the lead.

But an equally good effort brought the Honest Men level on the cusp of half-time, with Anton Dowds putting Francis Amartey's delivery in off the underside of the crossbar for his 11th goal of the season.

Morton stay sixth, seven points off the promotion play-offs, with Ayr a point behind and four clear of ninth place.

On-loan Partick Thistle striker Dowds rattled the woodwork in the second half as the hosts chased the winner.

The point against Morton is more than Ayr have managed in their previous three meetings with Dougie Imrie's side this season, but home boss Scott Brown might feel his side had enough chances in the second half to nick all three points.

Morton welcome league leaders Dundee United to Cappielow on Friday night - live on BBC Scotland - before Ayr host all-but-relegated Arbroath on Saturday.

Ayr United manager Scott Brown: "We could've nicked it late on but we've managed to get a draw instead of always being a team that's winning, losing, winning and losing.

"Francis Amartey did really well. He's not had a lot of game time, but he's shown a little bit of composure and quality one-versus-one. Anton's in the box and wants to score goals. We'd love to have him (beyond the summer)."

Morton manager Dougie Imrie: "I thought we were very good first half although unfortunately we didn't see the half out. Second half, credit to Scott Brown and Ayr, I thought they were better than us.

"Overall, I think a draw's a fair result. The goal was a great ball in from Michael and a great header by Kirk."
