Cambridge United captain Michael Morrison will not be able to train again for at least two weeks because he is still suffering the after-effects of a bruised lung.
Morrison had to go be substituted following a collision with team-mate Jake Eastwood against Harrogate Town last Saturday and was later taken to hospital.
The 37-year-old was subsequently discharged but he is still having problems breathing and walking properly.
"He's going to have a follow-up CT scan and X-ray in about two weeks but it looks like (there is) no long-term damage," boss Neil Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
"Other than scanning him, there's no scientific route for this other than he's just got to go at his own pace.
"Before he can do anything he's got to be walking properly, free from any pain or breathing difficulties for a 20-30 minute window. He's going to have to go on the bike for a period and then he's got to be able to go jogging etc."
Morrison began his career with Cambridge and is now in his second spell at the club, having rejoined them from Portsmouth in January 2023.
"We're hoping with a few more days' rest, he'll be able to be back full-time in the building next week and we can start building him up," added Harris.
"It could have been a hell of a lot worse. We're looking at losing the captain for a few weeks but when he walked off that pitch and I saw him with blood dripping out of his mouth, that was a horrible sight."
Cambridge are away to Bristol Rovers in League Two on Saturday.
