Newport County's summer recruitment spree has continued with the signing of former Sunderland winger Michael Spellman.

Spellman, 23, has joined subject to international clearance on a deal which will go through to the summer of 2026.

The Sunderland under-23s player is a product of the Park View Academy in the north east, having been on the books of Newcastle United as a schoolboy.

He joined neighbours Sunderland in June 2022 and has subsequently had loans at Whitby Town and Blyth Spartans.

Spellman told the club website: "I am delighted to get the deal over the line.

"I can't wait to get started. The club is on the rise and it wants to play good football which is what I am all about."

Spellman is Newport's eighth signing of the summer window, following the arrival of Matt Baker, Jacob Carney, Oliver Greaves, Kai Whitmore, Joe Thomas, Ciaran Brennan and Anthony Glennon.

The club is also searching for a new head coach to succeed Graham Coughlan, who left last month for the League Two club to move in a "different direction".
