Torquay United manager Paul Wotton admitted to a "strange" feeling of disappointment despite his side's 2-1 win over Hornchurch on Saturday.

Torquay scored two first-half goals courtesy of Finn Craske and Matty Carson but were forced to survive a late comeback as Hornchurch forward Angelo Balanta pulled one back for the visitors in the 88th minute.

"It's really strange," said ex-Plymouth and Southampton player Wotton.

"I hate myself at the moment because I feel down but we've had seven points from nine, and we've come through a tough period.

"I know Hornchurch were better than us in the second half, I'm never going to lie and talk rubbish like that but we showed some guts, some spirit and we put our bodies on the line," he added.

Despite dropping eight points in their last five games, Torquay still remain firmly in the hunt for promotion as they sit second in the National League South, six points off league leaders Dorking Wanderers but with two games in hand.

Although, Wotton admitted the Devon club were under pressure for much of the match, the 47-year-old praised his players' ruthlessness in the final third at Plainmoor.

"We got in that right-hand channel quite a few times. Youngy (Jordan Young) was calm, took that extra touch and passed it to Carson, he didn't just smash a cross in, he passed it to him and he set it up on a tee for Matty.

"It's that calmness in dangerous areas, it's really important. I think we've been in those areas an awful lot this season and wasted the chances."

Torquay visit Chelmsford City on Saturday in their next fixture.
