  5. 'Gauff couldn't have played much worse'published at 20:52 British Summer Time

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

I think that's one of the swiftest exits from the court I’ve ever seen from Coco Gauff.

She seems devastated by that performance.

She could not have played much worse than that in that match today.

Naomi Osaka played beautifully - it was very tough for Gauff and it looked very well prepared.

But so much of that was about the errors and the lack of confidence from Gauff. It's sad to see.

  6. 'I have all the respect in the world for Gauff' - Osakapublished at 20:48 British Summer Time

Naomi Osaka speaking on court after beating Coco Gauff in straight sets:

"I'm a little sensitive and I don't want to cry, but I had so much fun out here. I was in the stands two months after I gave birth to my daughter watching Coco, I really wanted an opportunity to come back here and play. This is my favourite court in the world and it means so much to me to be back here. I just want to say a big thank you to my team, it hasn't always been easy but they've been by my side so thank you and love you."

On the turning point for her form in the run-up to the US Open: "I played a match in Montreal where I had to save two match points and I thought since then anything is possible. You just have to try your best and have a smile on your face."

On playing Coco Gauff again: "It's definitely really special, I look up to her a lot I think the way she conducts herself is really special and I feel like to be such an amazing role model at such a young age is a gift and a talent she has. I have all the respect in the world for her."

On crowd support: "I was super locked in to be honest, but I felt like everyone wanted to watch a really great match and I hope that's what you got and that you continue to watch the great tennis that's going to be played later on today."

    Osaka 6-3 6-2 Gauff

Osaka enjoyed a run to the final in Montreal in the build up to the US Open, losing out to up and coming youngster Victoria Mboko.

But it looks like she's peaking at exactly the right time here in New York.

Over on Grandstand, there's a real tussle going on between 11th seed Karolina Muchova and 27th seed Marta Kostyuk.

Muchova, who has reached the semi-finals in each of the past two years, broke in her opponent's opening service game, and that proved enough to clinch the first set.

But the Czech player had two medical time-outs in the second set, receiving treatment on her lower back, and that has helped Ukraine's Kostyuk fight back to level the match in a tie-break, which she has raced through 7-0.

All three of Muchova's matches so far have been three sets, and given her career has been punctuated by serious injury, the odds must surely have swung in Kostyuk's favour going into the decider.

  9. Musetti in controlpublished at 20:37 British Summer Time

    *Munar 3-6 0-3 Musetti

Lorenzo Musetti is in total control here.

The Italian is relentless, punishing Jaume Munar's every mistake.

The world number 10 lets out an almighty scream as he breaks his Spanish opponent, before holding to 15 to race into a 3-0 lead in this second set. It's one-way traffic right now.

  10. Postpublished at 20:37 British Summer Time

That was actually a bit of a demolition from Osaka, wasn't it?

One hour and two minutes after stepping out on court she is into the quarter-finals.

  11. Postpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time

    Osaka 6-3 6-2 Gauff

Naomi Osaka looks emotional as she steps up for her post-match interview on court.

She recalls watching Coco Gauff win the US Open in the stands two years ago just after she had had her daughter.

What a moment for her here now, back on the court where she has lifted two titles.

    Wow. What a performance.

Has Naomi Osaka just catapulted herself onto the list of serious contenders for the title in New York?

Coco Gauff looks pretty frustrated as she departs the court but she just did not settle at all today.

It's a first Grand Slam quarter-final since the 2021 Australian Open for Osaka. Brilliant.

  13. Osaka match pointpublished at 20:32 British Summer Time

    Osaka 6-3 5-2 Gauff*

Three misses in a row, all into the net, hand Osaka a match point.

This was fairly unexpected, wasn't it?

  14. Postpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time

A backhand into the net takes us to deuce on the Gauff serve as she tries to serve to stay in the match.

  15. Postpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time

Gauff will serve to stay in the match and the competition.

    What a performance from Osaka.

  16. Osaka holdspublished at 20:27 British Summer Time

    Osaka 6-3 5-2 Gauff*

Gauff tries to be aggressive by coming into the net but her forehand skews off her racquet.

Another backhand into the net prompts the 2023 champion to cover her face with her hand.

But the American just has nothing to throw back at Osaka at this point as she takes another convincing hold.

I'm not sure I've seen Coco Gauff play worse than this.

  20. 'Osaka looks very secure'published at 20:23 British Summer Time

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Coco Gauff isn't really in control of anything in this match, and at the other end it's the opposite for Naomi Osaka.

Everything is under control with Osaka.

She looks very secure and knows what she's doing tactically.
