One of life's greatest mysteries will always be how PSG never won the Champions league with a front three of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar. Not only should they have won it, it should have been an absolute breeze. Even with Neymar's petulance, they had more than enough.

Re JayMK at 09:22. I would not call the Premier League a tougher league when for the last six seasons has seen the same winner in five of them by some margin and a two horse race in most of them.

  5. Wilson having surgery 'as we speak'published at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2024

Newcastle v Bournemouth (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson's injury: "It was a strange injury, he got in a tussle with the centre-back at the end of the last match. It was a muscle, his pectoral muscle, we had it scanned we hoped initially he could continue. When he went to see a specialist, it was apparent he will need surgery. I think he’s having it as we speak. It is no doubt a big blow for him. It's been a stop start season for him. We hope he’s back before the end of the season."

  6. 'The most important part of the season'published at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2024

Burnley v Arsenal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on current form and consistency: "It is the most important part of the season and we know every fixture will play a significant role in what we want to achieve.

"Burnley are extremely well coached and are very competitive, so we know we have a tough match on Saturday - we will play with the same energy and enthusiasm.

"We have done a lot of things right in the season, we have shown a lot of level of consistency and now we want to go another step forward and want to play the way we are playing - we will see where we get.

"We are working as a team on our strengths and on the things we can improve, trying to have more belief and embracing the players' qualities."

  7. 'Small margin of error for Gunners'published at 09:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2024

Burnley v Arsenal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

I am at Turf Moor for this one and I don't think it will be as straightforward for Arsenal as some people might think.

As ridiculous as it might sound, I was very impressed by Burnley when I watched them in their defeat against Liverpool. They started well, were well organised, and created chances, big chances... they just couldn't take them.

In the end, they paid the price for a couple of individual errors which get heightened when they happen in a close game like that one. They cannot afford many more of those if they want to stay in the Premier League.

Also, and I said this during my co-commentary at Anfield, the Clarets are not in a position to pinpoint certain games as being winnable. They have won three league games all season and they need to win at least three more just to get out of the relegation zone, so they need to approach every game as being 'must-win', including this one.

We know the importance of it for Arsenal at the other end of the table too. The Gunners blew West Ham away last week and they will need to keep their focus here because their title hopes rely on a very small margin of error, the same as Liverpool's do.

Mikel Arteta's side have just beaten Liverpool and West Ham, so this might seem as if it is the easiest of their current run. But despite four straight wins, which also includes Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, it is still a dangerous fixture because Burnley are scrapping for their lives.

I do think Arsenal will win though. Last season, the Gunners started well and fell away. This season, I think it's fair to say their early performances were not quite at that breathtaking or exhilarating level, but maybe this is their time to get going this time. It's probably a better way to do it, if they can.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on injury concerns for the weekend: "Some of them have been progressing more than others, we have got a training session today and I am positive we will get a few players back tomorrow.

"We have to go game-by-game and in the last few weeks we have had to play other players and we have not had players to do so, certain players we have tried to manage that in the best way."

On Thomas Partey: "No big set-backs and Thomas Partey is progressing really well and I don’t want to say too much, but it is looking good."

Would be good to see Mbappe in the Premier League but he'll take the easy option like Bellingham and go to Spain. If you want to look better than you are, play in an easy league. Not brave enough for the Prem....shame

Jurgen Klinsmann has been sacked as head coach of South Korea after just 12 months in the role.

The 59-year-old German was appointed in February last year, with his contract running until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

But South Korea were beaten in the semi-finals at the Asian Cup earlier this month, prolonging the country's 64-year wait for the title.

There had also been reports of in-fighting between top players.

Looks like Kylian Mbappe has finally seen sense and decided that a new challenge at Aston Villa is what he needs. I don't know if he'd fit into the starting 11 at the moment, though...

A lot of clubs lose big names and yes not in spectacle fashion, but it is a huge flex that PSG can lose Kylian Mbappe for free and it is not a big deal.

I don't see it as such a huge deal, PSG have kept him for a long time and it is normal for people to seek pastures new - it is not an embarrassment for PSG to lose him on a free.

Even though I was sceptical, Kylian Mbappe is going.

The note I got from PSG is it will take months for the separation to take place. They are negotiating loyalty bonuses and other stuff.

This free transfer for Kylian Mbappe will still cost Real Madrid €100-120 for the player to come for free.

France striker Kylian Mbappe has told Paris St-Germain he intends to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old's deal with the Ligue 1 champions is scheduled to expire and he has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Mbappe's future was the subject of a major stand-off with PSG last summer.

At one point, Mbappe was exiled from the first-team squad and left out of the club's pre-season tour of Asia.

However, an agreement was reached that ensured PSG would not lose out when Mbappe eventually left and the terms of his now seemingly inevitable exit are still to be confirmed.

The forward has a one-year extension clause, so it is expected his departure will involve either a sale with a transfer fee or financial sacrifices on the player's part.

Whilst PSG would have wanted Mbappe to remain at the club, his exit looks set to come as they aim to build a younger squad and move away from the 'Galacticos' plan, that has also seen Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Brazil internationalNeymar leave since the end of last season.
