And while Liverpool scored in the second half and came close to an equaliser when Harvey Elliott struck the bar, Fulham always had a measure of control. If Calvin Bassey checked his short pockets at full time, he would have found Mohamed Salah.

The problem for Silva is that this is not how Fulham have played all season. It is not even how Fulham have played all week.

This win was a tonic after a really poor eight days for the Cottagers. Last weekend, the atmosphere on the banks of the Thames was very different as Fulham were dumped out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals by Crystal Palace. They were also beaten at Arsenal in midweek.

But the Gunners are now the only top-four side Fulham have not beaten in the league this season. Against this, they have dropped points at home to three of the current bottom four - losing 4-1 at Craven Cottage to Wolves, as well as drawing with Ipswich and Southampton.

Fulham's past six league games have brought alternating wins and defeats - and it is that inconsistency which raises the biggest question as to how far Silva can take them.

"The reaction was great," Silva told his post-match media conference, referencing recent bad results. "The energy was there, the high tempo. We picked the right moments to press, to play balls in behind; we showed great commitment and attitude from the first minute.

"This has been a week of big games for us, and in the first two, we did not get what we wanted. So to bounce back and give something back for the fans was important, because the atmosphere has been top level."

The 2008-09 Premier League season remains the high water mark for Fulham. Under Roy Hodgson, they finished seventh with a best-ever total of 53 points; it secured qualification for the inaugural Europa League, in which the Londoners went all the way to the final.

For a decade and a half, that idyllic era seemed very far away for Fulham fans. But after a sun-soaked April day where they deservedly handed champions-elect Liverpool a first away league defeat of the season, they may start to believe those glory days may return.

Marco Silva's class of 2025 have moved on to 48 points with the win over Liverpool, just five shy of the club's record tally with seven league games still to play.

They sit eighth in the Premier League, firmly in the congested battle for Europe. Certainly Fulham are candidates for the Europa League - and potentially even more.

If this 3-2 win over Liverpool was the only Fulham game you saw this season, you would believe they could be a Champions League side. Silva's men were good value for the win, and could have been further in front following a first half where – an Alexis Mac Allister wonder goal aside – they were rampant.

Fulham pressed Liverpool relentlessly, like few sides have this campaign. Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, so often like granite, cracked under the relentless work-rate of Rodrigo Muniz, whose status as feared Premier League front man will astonish those who witnessed a failed loan stint at Middlesbrough.

Konate was caught out after six minutes trying to turn on the ball in his own area, and Liverpool were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Caoimhin Kelleher looked to have fouled Muniz. He was subbed in the second half after a torrid afternoon.

For the third goal, Muniz beautifully pulled a ball from the sky and finished low through Kelleher as Van Dijk was left standing by the Brazilian.

Give Fulham their due, they had definitely done their homework, they came out fighting from the word go. We know Liverpool like playing out from the back but with Fulham playing so high and with so much intensity it was so clear what was going to happen. LFC’s back line was just making mistake after mistake and some certain players just looked as they didn’t want to play. Liverpool need to look at themselves, they have already been knocked out of three cup competitions this season, so God forbid they should miss out on the league.

For their first half performance Fulham deserve it. They were the better team in the first 45 minutes and Liverpool weren't at the races.

In the second half Liverpool were the better team but Fulham defended brilliantly.

Calvin Bassey was the best player on the pitch keeping Mo Salah, the best player in the Premier League this season, quiet.

The result gives Fulham a real European chance now.

  5. 'We have to compete for seven more games'published at 07:35 British Summer Time

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said his said cannot afford to get complacent following their surprise defeat at Fulham.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot said: “We are fully aware of the fact that we have to compete for seven more games.

"We showed against Everton that it was a close call. Today, was a close call and many times, we’ve been on the right side of it.

"Today, we were on the wrong side. Mainly because of the errors we made."

Liverpool's unbeaten run has come to an end but - barring a remarkable collapse - they will end the season as Premier League champions.

Defeat at Fulham was the Reds' first in 26 league games and just their second of the campaign.

But with seven games remaining, Arne Slot's side require a maximum of 11 points more to secure the title.

Despite the setback at Craven Cottage, a record-equalling 20th top-flight crown is surely a formality now?

They could even win the title as early as 20 April - if results elsewhere go their way - with no team in Premier League history throwing away a lead of this size at this stage of the season.

The Reds' dominance has been clear for all to see this campaign, and they lead second-placed Arsenal by 11 points.

  7. Much-changed Chelsea held to draw at Brentfordpublished at 07:24 British Summer Time

Chelsea rang the changes and failed to fire as their bid to reach next season's Champions League hit another bump with a draw at Brentford.

The Blues' latest disappointment away from Stamford Bridge means they have gone eight away games in the Premier League without a victory, while Brentford remain winless in their latest eight at home in the top flight.

Chelsea beat Tottenham on Thursday, but Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, who started that game, were only selected as substitutes by head coach Enzo Maresca for this latest London derby.

A third draw in a row at the Gtech Community Stadium between the two sides kept Chelsea fourth in the Premier League, but they missed the chance to significantly close the gap to third-placed Nottingham Forest, who lost to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Manchester United and Manchester City played out an uninspiring goalless draw that underlined the need for change at both clubs this summer.

City did threaten twice at Old Trafford through Omar Marmoush but the Egypt forward could not beat United goalkeeper Andre Onana on either occasion.

United created a succession of half-chances. But once Alejandro Garnacho had been sent sprawling by Ruben Dias on the edge of the City box in the opening seconds, a familiar story unfolded. As on so many occasions this season, Ruben Amorim's side did not seem as though they believed they could score.

The nearest they came was 13 minutes from time when substitute Joshua Zirkzee turned a Patrick Dorgu cross goalwards but Ederson was able to push the Dutchman's effort to safety.

A draw keeps United anchored in the middle of the lower half of the table but City are now sweating on a Champions League spot, remaining in fifth - which would almost certainly be enough - but with Newcastle two points behind them with two games in hand.

Arguably the most inspiring moment of the whole afternoon came before kick-off when United captain Bruno Fernandes accompanied seven-year-old mascot Bobby Moore from Belfast on to the pitch.

The Portugal international invited Moore to Old Trafford after seeing a video of the youngster celebrating his goal in a previous Manchester derby. In the process Moore became United's first-ever wheelchair/powerchair-using mascot.

Southampton suffered the earliest relegation in Premier League history after a Brennan Johnson double inspired Tottenham Hotspur to a comfortable victory in North London.

The Wales forward converted Djed Spence's cut-back in the 13th minute, before he latched on to James Maddison's header over the defence to flick in a second three minutes before half-time.

Mateus Fernandes replied in the 90th minute, but Mathys Tel claimed his first Spurs league goal with a penalty in added time to ensure Saints became the first Premier League side to be relegated with seven games left, beating the previous record of six.

Liverpool's 26-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end as Fulham beat them at Craven Cottage.

Arne Slot's side had gone ahead through Alexis Mac Allister's superb 25-yard strike but three Fulham goals in 13 minutes turned the game on its head before half-time.

Ryan Sessegnon equalised with a smart first-time finish after Andreas Pereira's cross fell kindly for him in the box.

Alex Iwobi put Marco Silva's side ahead nine minutes later as he collected Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson's poor cross-field ball on the edge of the box and, after his initial shot was blocked, his second flew in via a deflection off the Scotland captain.

The third came when a Fulham corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, Iwobi made of a mess of his attempt to put it back into the middle but Rodrigo Muniz kept it alive.

A brilliant touch around the corner put him through on goal and the Brazilian striker finished calmly under Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
