Rashford over Gabriel Martinelli!? That is the funniest thing I've heard for a long long time. Martinelli is so underrated. He may not always produce but he works like a horse for the team. Please watch the matches.

  3. 'Arsenal appear to be in a little bit of a lull'published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (19:30 GMT)

    Rory Smith
Senior Writer for The Athletic on the Monday Night Club

I think there is probably an issue with the reliability of Arsenal's strikers but if they are playing teams that are organised and compact and can ignore the barrage of corners then it's not impossible that Arsenal will struggle to score goals because teams go through these phases every now and again.

I don't think there is a major systemic problem in terms of scoring goals from open play but they do appear to be in a little bit of a lull.

  4. Winning trophies brings belief - Artetapublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (19:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

The Premier League is obviously the prize for Mikel Arteta, but could lifting the Carabao Cup help Arsenal challenge for the the big prize this season? "I think it is really helpful. It brings belief, trust and positive energy,” said the Spaniard.

“Touching a cup generates that energy and I think it creates the right path."

As for tonight’s Carabao Cup opponents, Arteta thinks playing Crystal Palace "is always really tough" and "it is another layer of difficulty when you play a team twice in a row."

  5. 'Arsenal have been slower and not as dynamic'published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (19:30 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Premier League defender on the Monday Night Club.

There's a bit of a reliance on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, if you can keep those two players quiet - Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard aren't quite performing, Kai Havertz isn't where he was a few months ago. I think there has been a drop off from Declan Rice as well in that midfield area - that balance isn't quite right.

There's a lot to be said about the way Arsenal have played, I think it's been slower and not as dynamic and quick. They've tried to control games a little bit more and it's gone against them in a way.

  6. Glasner ready to field strong teampublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (19:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

For Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, he insisted on Tuesday he will put out a strong team against Arsenal.

“Of course. It's the quarter-final of a cup competition,” he said. “Every single game we call up the fittest team and tomorrow will be the same. If somebody is tired, they will get a break to rest."

On Eddie Nketiah, who joined Palace from the Gunners this summer: "I'm pretty sure he will get minutes in his old stadium. He's very ambitious and he's working hard. He had a very positive impact at Brighton - we got the game in more control. He wants to score and I see that every day in training."

Does he think Palace can beat Arsenal and book a place in the semi-finals? “I think it's possible [that we win],” said Glasner.

“They have been struggling a few weeks ago but now injured players are coming back and their form has got better and better."

Why are people so quick to judge Rashford wanting a new challenge!? Yes he hasn't been his best but I trust Amorim to bring out the best in him. Rashford will still be United player come May the way I see it.

  8. Frank questions Brentford schedulepublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Newcastle v Brentford (19:45 GMT)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank said they made a request to move Saturday's Premier League game against Nottingham Forest due to a congested fixture build-up but were told no.

Speaking before Wednesday's EFL Cup quarter-final, Frank aired his frustrations at his side's hectic schedule.

"Us and Crystal Palace are the only teams in the quarter finals that have to play three games in seven days, the other six teams, the bigger clubs - are playing in eight or nine days, which might be a coincidence? Maybe the EFL or Premier League can answer that. I'm not expecting an email or call as much as I would love one.

"When you look at when we start playing the first game and enter the next one we also have the shortest turnaround.

"We actually asked if we could move the Nottingham Forest game on Saturday but the Premier League said no so they are not willing to help in a short turnaround but it is what it is. I need to find a way to bring enough intensity for two 90 minutes with my squad."

  9. 'We want to achieve something special' - Howepublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Newcastle v Brentford (19:45 GMT)

Newcastle United manager Eddie HoweImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe spoke to the media yesterday to discuss what it would mean to bring the club its first major title for 69 years.

"It's what we're here for I made it very clear when I came to Newcastle that it's what I wanted to achieve. I speak on behalf of the players and coaching staff in that respect. When you get to this part of the competition it's important to recognise that that's our goal and what we're trying to do. These games take huge importance when you get towards the latter stages."

"I think the willingness has been there from previous teams [to win trophies] but we want to be the team that can get over the line and achieve something special. As you go through the competition, these rounds are very challenging and nothing will be taken for granted from our side. We know if we can hit the correct level of performance like against Leicester then I think we're a match for anyone in the division."

Years of United being abysmal with different players/managers and still giving excellent performances (helping them finish 3rd in a terrible season under ETH) alongside unrelenting racism that made him an easy target for other abuse. He is now blamed for performances he wasn’t part of and accused of PR when he takes a stand against poverty, must be hard.

  11. Slot makes a point with brave approachpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Southampton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
    Former footballer and presenter

Two points from six, but it isn't time to worry at Anfield... yet. The point against Fulham after being a goal down in 11 minutes and a man down after 17, felt like three.

Knowing you can be competitive against good teams with only 10 men gives the group a huge lift. Everton helped by denying Arsenal all three points in north London, but how do teams cope best when they lose a man so early in a game?

Arne Slot frequently left three v three at the back against Fulham with no covering player. Brave.

Had it backfired he would have looked naive, but it worked. They increased their work-rate, maintained 60% possession and managed not only to equalise twice, but were the team more likely to score at the end.

His players will believe in him even more after he showed that he believed in them.

Liverpool have won six of their last seven meetings with Southampton in all competitions (D1), scoring two or more goals in all of those clashes.

Arne Slot's side beat the Saints 3-2 in the Premier League last month and that result also marked the third time in the last four meetings that Liverpool have scored at least three goals against Southampton.

  13. 'It is a great honour to represent Southampton' - Ruskpublished at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Southampton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Southampton interim manager Simon RuskImage source, Getty Images

Interim Southampton boss Simon Rusk says it will be a "great honour" to take charge of the team against Liverpool, but he cannot get "overly emotional" about the situation.

"For me, I would ultimately like to focus on the process," he said. "If I become overly emotional in any aspect as a coach, I could start thinking and taking my eye off ball about what is the immediate task in hand.

"What I would say is that it is a great honour. I have worked at the club since the summer, it has got a great tradition, the fanbase is super committed and loyal and they are behind the players. So for me, concentrating on that as my focus is the right and professional thing to do.

"There is always a period of reflection after, and it will be a proud moment for me without any shadow of a doubt and it is a great honour. It is a great honour to represent the club and guide them into such an important game."

  14. 'I'm calm but there is a limit' - Slotpublished at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Southampton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

It’s a big night in the Carabao Cup tonight, but Arne Slot won’t have to brave the elements down at Southampton, which is small bonus for the Dutchman, as he sounded full of cold in his news conference yesterday.

The Liverpool head coach says he is calm on the touchline but certain refereeing decisions can make him become "emotional".

Slot will watch the Reds play Southampton in the quarter-final on Wednesday from the stands for the first time in his career, as he serves his touchline ban for accumulating three yellow cards so far this season.

"In general, I'm calm," said the Dutchman. "But there is also a limit for me and then I can get emotional.

"Unfortunately, that limit is reached more by refereeing decisions than the decisions my players make!"

  15. 'I still want him to be a part of Manchester United's squad 'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester United fan and Stretford Paddock YouTuber Jay Motty: "I think Ruben Amorim has been fantastic in his press conferences and interviews, it's an absolute masterclass every time he talks, he always seems to say the right things, he handles situations perfectly. He always seems to diffuse any sort of rumblings or anything that could turn into a soap opera. I was very impressed with what he said.

"I think its best for all concerned if Marcus Rashford, whilst he's at Manchester United plays a part for Manchester United and he's productive for Manchester United, whether that's off the bench, whether that's rotating, however that looks. I still want him to be a part of Manchester United's squad or first team so I think the manager is right to say what he said, I think he should try use Marcus Rashford, we've got a lot of games coming up. If he wants to move then it suits him to try his best.

Marcus Rashford being ready for a new challenge and not “rocking the boat” and having “no hard feelings” while simultaneously doing an interview with a leading sports journalist knowing fine well this will spread like wildfire and put Amorim on the spot is just peak Irony. The mental gymnastics he must of gone through to do this is impressive.

  17. 'If we do sell Marcus Rashford then we've got to make sure we spend that money wisely'published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester United fan and Stretford Paddock YouTuber Jay Motty on Marcus Rashford leaving the club: "I think if he wants to leave and the manager can see a way of using that money to bring someone else in who can play a part in this team, I think it's for the best that he does move on. I never thought I would say that about Marcus Rashford but he's one of the few players who, I know his wages are quite high, but you could get a decent fee for him, I know everyone is obsessed with PSR and the fact that he came through the academy means that it's pure profit.

"We are in a new system where there is a question mark, can Marcus Rashford be one of those 10s or can he be a nine in Ruben Amorim's system, maybe he can but if he's not dedicated to trying to force his way into the team, trying to play a part. If he feels like he's not really loved at Manchester United or the manager doesn't really want him then maybe it's best for all concerned that he does move on and we use that money to bring someone else in.

"I still worry about Manchester United and spending money because whilst it's a new regime, Ineos and Ruben Amorim, we have wasted a lot of money, on attackers as well. If we do sell Marcus Rashford then we've got to make sure we spend that money wisely."

United can’t keep hoping Rashford will change. Something badly wrong. It’s best for all if he moves. Amorin wants warriors not sulkers. He could’ve been a ledge! at OT!

  19. 'He looks like he's not enjoying it'published at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester United fan Tom Mortimer on the Football News Show: "I feel like he [Marcus Rashford] does need the new challenge, I think it's best for all parties at this point if he does move on because it's been a while since I've seen Marcus Rashford happy in a United shirt. I used to see that big smile and when Ten Hag first came, in his first season we saw that big smile very often but now, even when he scores these days you don't even see that much of a smile. He looks like he's not enjoying it. I think from just a personal level, for him it's probably time to go. He's a Manchester lad, he's been at the club since the age of 10. He loves the club, you can tell but for whatever reason, he's not happy and therefore I think it is for the best that he goes. He's got a huge amount of talent but when his head's not in the game, he's just not anywhere near the same type of player and I feel like we've seen that for far too long."

I just hope my club don't see Rashford as the answer to our striker needs. He won't be committed to a new club in England, he's ManU through and through. He's petulant, blows hot and cold on the pitch - we already have too many cast off former great stars who flop at Arsenal and cost a fortune, Sterling is the current retiree still hanging on, but luckily we aren't paying all his wages, but any payment to this bench warmer prevents an academy player getting a shot (lost too many already, mainly to Fulham!).
