It's been an interesting career so far for Marcus Rashford.

He has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United since making his debut in 2016, having come through the United youth ranks.

The 2022-23 campaign was his most prolific when he scored 30 in all competitions.

However, he has struggled for form over the past 18 months and attracted criticism from pundits and fans for a number of laboured displays.

When asked about his decision to omit Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his matchday squad at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Amorim said: "It is important to say it was not a disciplinary thing.

"Next week, next game, new life and they are fighting for the places. For me what is important is the performance in training, the performance in game, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with team-mates and push team-mates."

Marcus Rashford leaving Manchester United? Is this a possibility? It seems so.

In an interview with football writer Henry Winter published on X, the 27-year-old he is "ready for a new challenge" after being asked about his future at the club.

Rashford was dropped from the squad for Sunday's derby which United won 2-1 against Manchester City.

New head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed that there were no disciplinary issues behind his decision, but he appeared to hint he had hoped to see more from the England player on and off the pitch during his first few weeks in charge.

"When I leave I'll make a statement and it will be from me," Rashford said.

"When I leave it's going to be 'no hard feelings'. You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person.

"For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

Chelsea have never won the Women's Champions League, finishing runners-up in 2021 after a 4-0 defeat by Barcelona in the final.

"I went out knowing what I had to do. I wanted to have a positive impact and give my all, to give my team more options and bring energy," said Macario.

"In the first half Real Madrid had a great performance. We needed to have more possession and I was prepared to change that. Looking ahead to the draw, it doesn't matter who comes. We are confident in our abilities."

    Twente 3-0 Celtic

Celtic bowed out of their maiden Women's Champions League group campaign without a point as Twente won comfortably in Enschede.

Kayleigh van Dooren fired a deflected effort on to the crossbar before turning in Twente's opener with a powerful left-footed shot.

Danique van Ginkel netted from an offside position soon after but Twente kept pushing.

Goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers punched a swirling Van Dooren corner into her own net for the Dutch side's second.

Natalie Ross turned another fierce corner past team-mate Rodgers as Celtic toiled towards half-time.

The visitors rallied after the break but could not claw back their hosts.

This was Chelsea's last match of 2024 and Sonia Bompastor will be pleased her side get some time off.

Winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd picked up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw at Leicester at the weekend and missed the game in Spain against Real Madrid, as did Maelys Mpome with a quad injury keeping her out again.

England forward Lauren James will be out until the new year because of a calf injury, while Sophie Ingle, Mia Fishel, Sam Kerr, Kadeisha Buchanan and Aniek Nouwen are long-term absentees as they recover from respective anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

Chelsea suffered a further setback just before half-time as midfielder Guro Reiten had to be replaced after suffering what appeared to be an injury to her right ankle.

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor, who succeeded Emma Hayes in the summer, has now won 15 and drawn one of her 16 games.

"We were not very happy with our performance in the first half," said Bompastor. "We all sat down together at half-time and told ourselves we had nothing to lose.

"We have a strong mentality, and that's important to win games [Catarina] Macario is a world-class player; she changed the game. She showed a lot of confidence by scoring those two penalties."

Substitute Catarina Macario scored two penalties as Chelsea came from behind to beat Real Madrid and move into the Women's Champions League quarter-finals as Group B winners.

Real had looked on course to snatch top spot after Scotland forward Caroline Weir gave them an early lead with her shot taking a deflection off Lucy Bronze before Hannah Hampton could not keep the ball out, despite getting a hand to the strike.

Sonia Bompastor, in danger of suffering a first loss since she took charge of the Blues in the summer, brought on United States international Macario for the ineffective Mayra Ramirez in a game-changing substitution at half-time.

The impact was instant. After already having an effort ruled out for offside and another shot go just wide, Macario scored her first penalty in the 51st minute after she had been brought down by Olga Carmona.

The defender, who scored when Spain beat England 1-0 in the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup, conceded another penalty shortly afterwards as she handled following Wieke Kaptein's flick.

Macario again fired her penalty high into the right side of the goal as Chelsea went on to win Group B with six wins out of six.
