  1. 'He's arguably still one of out best players'published at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester united fan and Stretford Paddock YouTuber Jay Motty spoke to the Football News show: "It's just a bit disheartening, I get it, anyone can see that Marcus Rashford hasn't looked happy at Manchester United for some time. You can tell by his body language, something's not quite right and his performances over he last 18 months have been pretty erratic, if I am being brutally honest. But it's still sad to see, this is a player that came through the academy, scored a load of goals when he burst on to the scene on his debut and the winner at the Etihad, for a long time, he was one of Manchester United's best players.

"He's arguably still one of out best players, especially on his day but it's just not really worked out recently and you can see before the Manchester derby, it would have been absolutely unthinkable a couple of years ago for Marcus Rashford to be dropped from the squad. He was dropped from the squad and Manchester united managed to get a win. So I understand it, but it's still leaving me a bit deflated because he's a player that I've loved since he came through the academy."

  2. 'It's great to have Yang in the building'published at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on 18-year-old winger Yang Min-hyuk, who agreed to join the club in January: "We can't register him until 1 January so he won't train with us but I always feel it's good, I had this experience at Celtic with the Asian lads we brought in, the Japanese and Korean boys, bringing them in before Christmas which allows them to settle in, especially off the field.

"That way by the time we get to register them in a couple of weeks they are already settled and can train fully. It's good to see him around. He has been doing some English lessons which is great, he's already sort of conversing and it's great to have him in the building."

Rashford is highly overpaid, and as such will not go anywhere as a "normal" sale. Very few clubs can afford his wages, those who can will not consider him a great buy. Either United subsidize his wages or, more likely, sell him for a lot less than they would like. Put him in a "smaller team" that not everyone "parks the bus" against, and he can shine. Running at defenders, not being expected to defend or win the ball back. He will be in the limelight, look happier and be confident.

  4. 'It's clear he lacks passion'published at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester United fan Jorgie McHale speaking to the Football News Show: "I think for me it's fairly natural for a player to want to seek new challenges, especially in this point of their career. I think especially after the recent performances at United in recent years. It must have been challenging as a player to be part of that. As a fan, it's been really frustrating to watch everything unfold, especially last season. He's been at the club for such a long time, he's 27 now. It's annoying because I really would have liked to have seen the opportunity, what Amorim would have been able to do with him.

"He's had such an impact previously at the club, it would have just been nice to see and have that chance to see how we could elevate him but after his recent comments, I think to watch Marcus Rashford on the pitch, it's clear he lacks passion. His body language as a player, just to me, seems very disinterested. It doesn't strike me as somebody who is acting like he really wants to be there. There's obviously been breakdown from previous management, whatever is going on in training, the fact that he's been played out of position, things like that have led to the breakdown. It's clear that his head, it doesn't seem to be screwed on any more. He's not giving enough to the club and I think he is in a position now where he has just had enough.

"To have been a the club for such a long time, it's obviously a welcoming change and I think for me as a fan, the performance hasn't quite been there so if he was to go, I think I definitely do welcome it ."

It seems Amorim is doing everything he can to persuade Rashford to stay, but, as the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink it.

  6. 'We will try and play our football'published at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on Manchester United: "I want to win and want to play well. I don't think it's anything new. We'll go out there and try and play our football. If we do, we'll be hard to stop."

Asked about his comments that he always wins a trophy in his second season, Postecoglou made clear he "answers questions he is asked" and hasn't being going on about that statement in the way the reporter suggested.

He added that it is only the quarter-final and you can only get excited further down the line.

  7. 'Acheampong can be a great player for this club'published at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on how pleased he is that Josh Acheampong has signed a new contract with the club: "Yes, very happy. Josh was with us in pre-season. I didn't know him personally but after two or three days he really impressed me and since pre-season I've been trying to understand the situation with him in terms of contract and this kind of things - now finally, the club found an agreement and we are all happy because we are all convinced and sure that Josh can be a great player for this club."

On whether he will need to go out on loan: "My personal opinion is that he has to stay close to us so as much as we can keep him here, that is much better."

  8. Amorim has made 'an impact straightaway'published at 13:43 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim: "Seems to have come in and made an impact straightaway. He's obviously tweaked the formation a bit and is giving players an opportunity. But as they showed at the weekend, they are very tough competitors. Looking forward to meeting him."

Asked about the situation involving Marcus Rashford, Postecoglou refused to comment on players that aren't his.

  9. 'I think football was clean then and is clean now'published at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on how clean he feels football is today compared to when he walked into Juventus as a player off the back of a doping scandal in 2000: "I think football was clean at that time and is clean in this time. I don't think there is a big difference between my time at Juventus and now. These kind of things have happened in the past, they happen now and they are going to happen in the future."

  10. Udogie 'sore' but not ruled outpublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on team news: "There is no injury for Destiny Udogie but he is still sore from the [Sunday's] game [against Southampton]. Not ruling him out but will see how he is with the turnaround."

On fitness of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero: "I think both will be in the new year. Not as significant an injury as last time with Micky but obviously having a setback the medical team is going to make sure he is right to go.

"Mikey is back in training. The next cabs off the rank are Mikey and Ben Davies potentially next week and Richarlison potentially first week of the new year."

  11. 'It is my job to deal with off-field matters, not the players'published at 13:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on his thoughts on Mudryk as a player and his ability: "He was improving a lot, especially in the last game. He has started to understand what position he has to stay in. At the beginning it was because of his skills he was moving and running a lot but in the last two or three games he was improving a lot and we were very happy with him. In terms of where he can be in one, two or three years. I don't know.

"The talent we see on the training pitch is exactly the same as what you sometimes see during the game. With Mykhailo it is exactly the same feeling. In the training session, it is exactly the same as in the game."

On being able to manage different situations during his time at Chelsea: "I just try to convince the player that the only side that we can decide is the pitch side. Everything up and around the pitch, sometimes we cannot control that. To convince them that if we need to solve things outside of the pitch, it is my job to do it not their job. They have to be focused on the game, the day-by-day. They have to work hard and try and win games as much as we can and then the rest is about the club and it's about me how we solve these problems."

Ange Postecoglou uses the phrase “next cab off the rank” when discussing which players are fit for tomorrow’s EFL Cup quarter-final. He then jokes: “There’s always noise about Man a United, where have you been?!” when asked about Marcus Rashford. Quotes to follow.

Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca is still answering questions about Mudryk…

  13. 'Maybe Marcus Rashford isn't the golden boy anymore'published at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    The Football News Show

Manchester United fan Jorgie McHale speaking about Marcus Rashford on the Football News Show: "There's, I would say, an attitude problem, with Marcus Rashford, which as fans is frustrating. So unfortunately, as sad as it is and he has been such an impact at the club, similar to Scott McTominay, seeing people who have been here for such a long time, seeing them leave, sometimes the performance of a club as a whole, we have to welcome it, unfortunately.

On the manager: "Ruben Amorim, he clearly wants to make a bit of a shake-up at the club, I think he wants to come in and even looking at last weekend's derby, he wants to show people that he's making an impact and that he is making a change. What we've been doing over recent seasons and recent performances, it hasn't been working so he's come in with a fresh pair of eyes. He said recently, all the decisions that he makes are a result of what he's seen in training, so we have to trust it."

"Looking at Rashford, once upon a time he was one of the best, if not the best player that we had on the pitch. There's some younger talent coming up that have been fostered and nurtured a bit more, in Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho, maybe Marcus Rashford isn't the golden boy anymore."

I think it’s time for Rashford to go. Utd fan for 50 years and I never really see the lad put in the work rate on the pitch, closing down players, working for his team to win the game. Even back when Mourinho was manager the boss pulled him up on his ability to lazily track back. Rashford has done well for himself and has so much potential still but that won’t come without working hard at it. Thank you, and bye.

  15. 'When these kind of things happen, we all need support'published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on if they have to look after Mudryk's mental health: "It's not about Mykhailo, it's about any player in the world that if this kind of thing happens then they need support. No matter if they are 20 or 30 or English or Italian or Ukrainian - when these kind of things happen, I need support, you need support, they need support - we all need support. It is not about Mykhailo, his age or his country. When these kind of things happen, we all need support."

On how the squad took the news: "We had all the same feeling. The teammates were all surprised because Mykhailo at the beginning was ill, he wasn't in the squad and then this happened so they were all surprised and at the same time sad because we don't like these kind of things."

On how important it is for his teammates to support him: "It's not only the senior players that need to support him, I think in this kind of moment it is important that all of the teammates are there to support Mykhailo."

  16. 'We believe Mudryk'published at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was asked what he means when he says he "trusts" Mudryk: "If you say trust, what does it mean? We trust Mykhailo and we support Mykhailo and trust means that we believe Mykhailo, we trust Mykhailo and we support him.

"What Mykhailo said and what we said is that we trust him and support him."

On whether this has happened to him before in his career: "No, I don't think so."

On how equipped he feels to deal with a situation like this: "First of all, these kind of things not only happen to young players but players with experience. It is my duty since we started that I try and have a relationship with players quite close because I like it that way. With Mudryk it is exactly the same and I am here to help him in anything he needs. At this moment it is normal that he is going to need help from the club, from me and from his teammates and we are all there trying to support him."

When asked if he believes Mudryk is innocent: "We all believe that, then we'll see."

On whether he is confident he could make a comeback if he is found guilty and if that would spark the end of his career at Chelsea: "I don't think so. I think he will come back. The only thing is we don't know when, that's the only doubt we have at the moment. For sure he is going to come back."

  17. Are Man Utd better without Rashford?published at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

    Manchester United

    Yes, just....

Manchester United have a higher win percentage when Marcus Rashford doesn't play by 1.5%. However, given Rashford's starts more than he doesn't means the sample size may make that comparison a bit unfair.

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on how he deals with the Mudryk situation when it comes to the other members of the squad: "It's not the first time that something like this has happened. It has already happened in the past. I think they know exactly what they have to do and this is the reason that we trust and support Mykhailo."

On whether this is a wake-up call or reminder to other players when going away on international duty: "I don't think so."

On if he has had direct contact with Mudryk: "Yes, absolutely. We are all upset, sad and we are there to support Mykhailo. I spoke with him days ago."

On how the club are dealing with things at the moment: "At the moment he can't train. We are waiting but as I say, the club are there ready to support the player with all the aspects he needs."

On when the test occurred and when he found out: "To be honest, I don't know."

  19. 'We support and we trust Mudryk'published at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Chelsea v Shamrock Rovers (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on what he has said to Mykhailo Mudryk following the news of yesterday's failed drug test and how the player is doing: "The situation is a bit more clear in terms of we have a statement from the club. The club has already said what needs to be said so there is nothing to add. The club, the coaching staff and all of the people that are inside the training ground - we support and we trust Mykhailo."

On what support the club are currently offering Mudryk: General support in terms of - we trust Mykhailo and when these kind of things happen - you need to support your players in all aspects. It's general. Mykhailo is a Chelsea player, he is involved in the squad so it is also my duty to be in contact with him. Me, the club, the teammates and the player - we are all there.
