Morecambe might not be bringing much sunshine to their fans at the moment but you'd be wise not to write them off, especially with Derek Adams in charge.

The Scot is back for a third spell in charge having kept them in the EFL in his debut season and then, in 2021, secured promotion to League One for the first time in their history before departing for Bradford City soon after that play-off final.

Within eight months he was back in Lancashire to help stave off relegation to League Two, before joining another of his former clubs in Ross County.

Adams lasted just three months back in the Highlands and returned to Morecambe this summer to be greeted by and a hangover from off-field issues at the end of last season.

It perhaps isn't surprising they have made a slow start with the late lifting of a transfer embargo leading to 15 players being signed on one day in July.

After relegation last season which culminated in an enforced change of ownership, Fleetwood Town are rebuilding back in League Two.

Former Scotland international Charlie Adam is in his first managerial role and despite being unable to keep them in League One has overseen just one defeat from their opening five games in the fourth tier.

Fleetwood have also recorded notable EFL Cup wins over West Brom and Rotherham this season before bowing out to Adam's former club Stoke City in a penalty shoot-out.

"It's good that everybody thinks it's a really great start; we think we are doing okay, we are getting better," Adam told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"We think we can improve and we are going to improve as the season goes on. That's the important part."

The Cod Army are unbeaten in their last four EFL games at Highbury Stadium and are looking to take that run to five on the bounce for the first time since April 2023.

Ryan Hendrie is also serving a suspension following his red card in their dramatic 3-3 draw against Colchester so in comes Ross Millen at left-back as Morecambe's only change.

Morecambe's last league outing was their 3-3 draw to Colchester United and it was... eventful.

Shrimps boss Derek Adams had a fiery exchange with the fourth official in the first-half and was rewarded with a second yellow card, a £500 fine and - importantly for today's clash with Fleetwood Town - a one-match touchline ban.

Although Morecambe will be without their manager by their side, with assistant Danny Grainger manning the technical area, the Scot told BBC Lancashire that he doesn't think his absence from the dugout can change the outcome of a match.

"It's not about me, it's about how the players and how well they have done on the day," Adams said.

"I'm still able to make changes, changes in formation - it doesn't affect anything in that way. All it affects is me standing on the touchline."

Welcome to the second EFL Lancashire derby in the space of 24 hours and, after Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers drew a blank yesterday we're kind of assuming they were just saving the goals for us tonight!

This is one of the more recent additions to the whole raft of rivalries in this particular corner of the UK, as it is just the ninth league meeting between Fleetwood and Morecambe with the home side 3-2 up in the wins column.
