It was another chance for England fans to hear about Thomas Tuchel's philosophy and approach before he takes charge of his first match on Friday and he gave plenty of indications to how he'll set up his team.

Here are some of the things he said during his news conference:

    • He was fairly critical of the approach at Euro 2024, saying the team was too 'afraid' and he wants his side to play with an excitement and hunger to win.
    • He also responded to a question about England failing to win trophies, saying he felt there was a 'pressure and tension' that he's witnessed watching on.
    • However, he said he's excited by the prospect of leading the team out at Wembley on Friday and that he admitted he'll feel a 'bit nervous'.
    • As for the team selection, he confirmed that Chelsea's Cole Palmer is not available after suffering an injury with his club but the rest of the players have all trained.
    • Tuchel also said he wants the team to reflect the Premier League with physicality

That's your lot from Thomas Tuchel and Harry Kane ahead of England's opening World Cup qualifier against Albania tomorrow night.

Thoughts on that? Thought both spoke well. Some interesting stuff in there.

Let's have a little recap, shall we?

  3. 'Being able to talk about it is important'published at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke about the sports psychology support that players have access to: "We had someone in camp with us in every camp. We kind of went away from that now a little bit. I feel like a lot of players have enough people to talk to among the staff if needed.

"I think it's a big part of football now to share what you are feeling, good or bad, on a football level and on a personal level, especially when you are in major tournaments.

"Being able to talk about it is important and we've done well as a national team and again its always something that we are thinking of improving."

  4. 'I am extremely proud to wear the badge'published at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke about how quickly his international career has gone by and his goals with the national team: "It goes so quick. It's scary really how quickly a career goes. I am extremely proud to wear the badge, I am extremely proud to be a part of this team.

"I feel like there's still a lot to give on and off the pitch and help this country be successful in a major tournament. That's all my goal. That'll be the biggest achievement of my career if I am able to do it."

  5. 'The next step is to have uncomfortable conversations'published at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke about the next steps under Thomas Tuchel: "I think what he's saying is the next step is to go into detail and have uncomfortable conversations with each other on the pitch and off the pitch when things aren't quite going your way.

"Not just be a friend to your teammates but dig your teammate out and push them on in a different way. I think it's that next step.

"But to normally be in a winning team is that uncomfortable moments that you still have to be willing to have those conversations."

  6. 'I think there was more expectations than what we had in any other tournament'published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke about the weight of expectations on the players in Euro 2024: "I think there were more expectations than what we had in any other tournament. In 2018, no expectation, in 2020 not so much. In the World Cup in Qatar, we were not the favourites but we did quite well.

"This was probably the first one we were one of the favourites. It was clear that people expected us to win the tournament. Even though we leaned on the experience we all had in other tournaments, we couldn't quite find the rhythm, we couldn't quite find the energy together.

"In one sense it shows how good our character and resilience are to still reach a European final. But for sure when watch those games back, we didn't have the rhythm we had in other games."

  7. 'It'll be a dream'published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane was asked about whether he has thought about lifting the World Cup next year: "It'll be a dream. You play so many games a year, you have so many moments, it's hard to really think that far ahead. Of course we have to qualify first which is the most important thing.

"In general, to lift the trophy with England is in the back of my mind anyway and it'll be a dream to achieve that. It hurts when you've been so close and we know we've been moments away from doing that but I think that gives you more motivation to go one step further and the World Cup is the biggest of them all."

  8. 'Palmer is not with us'published at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on if all the players are fit and an update on Cole Palmer: "Cole will not be with us. He was not on the pitch with Chelsea, we have waited quite a while now for feedback and for the chance maybe to call him up but he is not on the pitch and not available. It makes no sense to call him up now. We stay with the group that we have.

"Everybody is in training today, all 26 players so that is the full choice. Hopefully nothing happens in this training session and we will have some tough choices to make for tomorrow."

  9. 'I don't feel a lot of pressure in general'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on if he feels any pressure to win the World Cup: "I don't feel a lot of pressure in general. I feel the pressure but mostly I feel it as a privilege and mostly I don't feel it at all because I am in the tunnel preparing the match and once it is there I feel the pressure. I feel the pressure when it comes to semi-finals and finals, I have the experience of feeling the pressure. I need it also in my coaching career to adapt to that and find methods to cope with it. It has helped me to have the experience in it.

"We have only six camps and that is why I was so strong on the point to bond with each other. It is also my responsibility to stay connected in between camps. To visit the players and call the players but the players between each other, they need to stay connected and take care of each other between camps. Otherwise it will not be enough just six times, 10 days, will not be enough to create a togetherness and the special atmosphere that is needed once we hopefully arrive in the US.

"Thinking about what we have to do and what the outcome is does not help us. The only thing that helps is worshipping every single day we have. The players did exactly that from Monday. It was a pleasure to be a part of it. It is not over, it is just the start."

  10. 'It hasn't officially been formed yet'published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane on the leadership group within the squad: "We had brief conversations with it. It hasn't officially been formed yet. You have me, Hendo [Jordan Henderson], you have Kyle [Walker].

"Obviously, Dan [Burn] has come into his first camp but I think Dan is seen as a leader in his role. And we have the likes of Dec [Declan Rice] and Jude [Bellingham] and players like that even though they are younger have the responsibility to show those leadership qualities as well.

"It hasn't been spoken about a lot but I'm sure we will over the next few days. I'm sure the conversations will continue when we are away from camp as well up until the June camp and they are those kinds of people that the conversations will be frequent."

  11. 'I felt that the team maybe in the Euros were not free enough to express themselves'published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel if he thinks it has been a problem playing players out of position: "No, not in the last few years. Everyone is trying it and I think Gareth [Southgate] did excellent in doing so. I felt that the team maybe in the Euros were not free enough to express themselves in a stable structure. But England were not the only team to change structure from match to match. I think we have to make sure that when we play now, everyone knows their role on the field and accepts the role and plays disciplined in the role.

"From the acceptance of the spaces for your teammate comes the freedom. From within your space you can look out for solutions. We need to bond a little bit better, we need to find more rhythm."

  12. 'Very straight talking'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane on the difference between Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich and now with the Three Lions and how he is during training: "He brings a lot of energy when he's on the pitch. I think that's definitely fell into the team and the team has responded very well.

"Very straight talking, he knows what he wants and knows what he wants from his team. It doesn't matter who you are or how many games you played, he'll tell you the same as he will tell one of the young players he wants and that's a good standard to set."

  13. 'Albania are very strong in the counterattacks'published at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on what he expects to see from his players: "I hope we can implement the higher rhythm in our game, a higher intensity, that we can have more touches in the opponent's box and more ball recoveries in the opponent's half and that we can implement our structure that helps us control counterattacks because Albania are very strong in the counterattacks. Individually they have a wider range of passing options so this is what we need to make a good result happen."

  14. 'I was surprised if I'm honest, didn't expect it'published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane on when he first heard that Thomas Tuchel had been named the new head coach: "I was surprised if I'm honest, didn't expect it. I guess I just wasn't thinking of him as a national team coach. But, yeah, once it was announced, I was really excited. I had the pleasure of working with him last year and I knew what he could bring to the type of squad we have.

"We've only been together a few days and it hasn't disappointed. Camp after camp, as he settles in and we get to know him more, I think we will improve as we go. Ultimately, it's about building up until next year."

  15. 'I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players during Euro 2024'published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on why the men's team haven't won a major trophy since 1966: "I heard this a lot about the shirt, that it is a heavy shirt but it's not. It is a high quality shirt and it will weigh less when we come to America because they already work on a shirt that adapts to the climate there. The shirt is not heavy in reality.

"Of course I know what the players mean. Maybe it is another way to put it what I felt watching the Euros, I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players and it felt to me like they were more afraid not to lose and have even more pressure added in their home country. rather than the excitement to make something special happen. I think we need to turn this around because we have so many experienced players and players who have won trophies with their clubs. I think we have every right to be self confident but every journey starts with the first match and first steps. The very first steps we did excellent and now we have to prove the point that we are ready for that. We will have six camps to qualify and then make our very best in America."

  16. 'We have been really sharp in training'published at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane was asked how the players have tried to make it easy for Thomas Tuchel in his first few days: "I think we just tried to be as good as we can. We have been really sharp in training. I feel like he's been happy with the way we have trained and taken on information.

"Because it's not easy you know, he comes waiting for four or five months, it's a lot of ideas and very little time to deliver those ideas, especially on the training pitch. I think all the lads have been really good in taking in information and the energy, especially in training yesterday was high."

  17. 'We have every right to be proud of the Premier League'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on if it is important to reflect himself in the team: "Yeah but I want an active team. If it wants to reflect me I want an emotional, active and hungry team. You can leave your footprint in different styles but I think we need, especially also me, to respect the quality of the Premier League and should reflect it.

"We have every right to be proud of that league and I have always felt it amazing to come to different stadiums during my time in England [as Chelsea manager] and feel this energy from the crowd. What they demand of the players, this was very, very pure. Even if people from outside think 'ah maybe they have the biggest names, they have the most money and it is the richest league' but on the matchday itself it becomes very pure about football. This is what I love, this is what shapes the character of the players. This is why I love to be around them and I love working with them. The physicality and you can light up a stadium so easily in the Premier League with one tackle or header. Everyone is suddenly on board."

  18. 'I spoke before of how important Jordan had been in other tournaments'published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke on the inclusion of Jordan Henderson and how his leadership would help the squad: "I think it's great. In any squad, you need good leadership, and you need different leadership. I spoke before of how important Jordan [Henderson] had been in other tournaments. We complement each other really well in leadership roles. We are totally different types of leaders but we both have an impact on how we do it. It's great to have him."

  19. 'Tactical tweaks is not so deep as in club football'published at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel differences between club and international football: "I used all the support the FA provides which is on the highest level. This is a proper machine the FA and they provide all the support you need as a coach, especially as a coach with no experience in international football. But seeing the players come now from their clubs it is our job now to create one idea that everyone can buy into.

"I think the level of depth in tactical tweaks is not so deep as in club football because you don't have as much time so it is also the challenge for us to keep things simple. Clarify stuff, keep easy messages and keep going with the team spirit and the bond between the fans tomorrow and also the country, it is super important."

  20. 'I think we will build up and to try and play out'published at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

England v Albania (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane spoke on the style of play under Thomas Tuchel that they will adopt: "We spoke a lot about the counter-press when we lose the ball, especially attacking players having the responsibility to try and win it back as quick as we can.

"I think we will build up and to try and play out and to try and have a lot of the ball, lot of possession and ultimately to create a lot of chances.

"We have the team to do that, we have a lot of players in good form, we have a lot of young players that bring a lot of energy to the team. And tomorrow night it will be down to us to do that - to excite the Wembley crowd. It will be a tough game."
