After presenting a calm figure on the touchline for 90 minutes, Nick Cushing released his emotions once the final whistle blew.

With a beaming smile on his face, Cushing applauded the Manchester City fans as he walked around the Joie Stadium with a beaming smile on his face.

"For me it was about making sure we could compete against the top teams. To win trophies, you have to beat the best," said Cushing.

"We have to be a threat in every phase of the game and have that presence. It's how you win tight and critical games."

It was a magical night at the Joie Stadium. That was a tactical masterclass from Nick Cushing.

He unleashed [them] in the second with Vivianne Miedema coming on. Creating that shape where Miedema and Kerolin can cause so many problems.

It's only half-time here but it's such a magic lead to take to Stamford Bridge.

We know Chelsea will find more gears, they've got so much quality.

  3. 'Bringing Houghton in was a stoke of genius'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

Former Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Yeah Nick Cushing has brought Steph Houghton into the coaching team. For someone like Steph, she is a legend of not just Manchester City but England as well, she had a really tough end to her career with the Achilles injury that hampered her. It mean't she got left out of the England squad and found it hard to find game time.

For her to be brought back, I think it gives everyone a big lift. Everybody will know her around the place and she can be a fantastic addition to the staff. I'm not sure what role she is in exactly but I think for the club to have her back onboard is a stroke of genius.

It makes a lot of sense and it looks like it has had a really positive impact already.

  4. Cushing embracing Chelsea battlepublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

With two more matches to come against Chelsea in the next week, it's a good job Nick Cushing says he embraces the tactical battle of coming up against Sonia Bompastor.

As well as making tweaks to their formation and encouraging his players to be more aggressive, he has added to his coaching staff - with former England captain Steph Houghton on the touchline with him on Wednesday.

"It's not ideal to come in mid-season. It's definitely not ideal to come in five days before a cup final, to play a team four times in a row and one that hasn't lost," said Cushing.

"But the greater the challenge, the more exciting it becomes. We lost the final which was incredibly difficult - but we won tonight and we roll on to the next one."

  5. 'I believe in the group, I wouldn't be here if not'published at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

    FT: Man City 2-0 Chelsea

    Manchester City

Manchester City interim manager Nick Cushing, speaking to DAZN: "I know it's going to be tough against Chelsea, so you're going to have to suffer at times and we're going to have to take chances. I thought we had moments in the second half where we could be better like the cup final but we defended the game much better tonight."

On how things felt coming into the game: "Coming out of the cup final there was initial disappointment but a lot of positives in the game. Then you find out you lose two key players and it's just about opportunity. I believe in the group, I wouldn't be here if I did not. I think there are some small things that could make us a lot more and we showed that."

On Vivianne Miedema being benched: "We've got to look at the team in the sense of playing a top team every three days. I'll probably do it again at the weekend, maybe not with Viv but maybe with somebody else. You have to be at it against Chelsea and you have to be fresh because they're a top, top team so I had a plan in terms of trying to get the best out of her in a short period of time. I've got to find the next plan for the next one."

Amazingly, last night's Champions League game was the second of four matches in a row where these two teams will come to blows.

Let's take a look at what we've seen and what's still to come:

    • Last Saturday saw Chelsea claim their first silverware under Sonia Bompastor as they beat Manchester City 2-1 in the League Cup final.
    • Man City bounced back in style last night with a brilliant Champions League last eight first leg win.
    • Up next on Sunday is the WSL installment of this four-match series as City welcome Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium.
    • And finally, on Thursday, Chelsea welcome City to west London looking to overturn a 2-0 deficit and book their spot in the last four of the Champions League.

"Can we play you every week," sang the Manchester City fans in jest because they basically are at the moment.

Supporters at Joie Stadium revelled in Wednesday's win over Chelsea, and so did interim boss Nick Cushing.

After enduring a painful defeat in Saturday's League Cup final - having had just five days to prepare - Cushing had to lift his side to face the same team again in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals.

He did more than lift them, guiding them to a remarkable 2-0 win at Joie Stadium, thanks to a double from substitute Vivianne Miedema.

Cushing released his emotions after full-time and stayed back to soak up the plaudits as they sang 'Blue Moon' and chanted "City, City, City".

Let's just have a reminder of the Champions League quarter-finals first-leg results then.

The second legs for the top two matches take place on Wednesday, 26 March with the other two games a day later.

The semi-finals have the first legs on 19 and 20 April with the second legs a week later. Wolfsburg or Barcelona will play Manchester City or Chelsea and Real Madrid or Arsenal will face Bayern Munich or Lyon.

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor speaking to DAZN after Chelsea's first defeat of the season: "It was a tough performance, a tough result for us. Maybe the only positive thing from the night is we have a second leg. We will play at home and when there is hope you need to believe it will be possible. We need to analyse the game and put the right elements in the next two games to make sure we have a better result.

"I need to watch the game again to analyse but I told my players we need to start the game from the beginning. We didn't start the way we wanted. In that context we gave hope to City and they felt it was possible to get a result against us."

On if it's tough playing Man City in four successive games: "We have the quality in the squad. We have the depth to play them four times and manage that situation. I am still confident even if it's tough. Everyone is disappointed but my job is to make sure going into the next game in every training session we work as hard as we can."

On how she keeps her squad happy: "It's my job to make sure everyone turns around and focuses on what we can control now."

On the uphill battle to stay in the Champions League: "We said our ambitions at the beginning of the season and we won't change that. Our ambitions are still there. That is the first time we have been beaten, so that is not a drama. It is a big competition for us and we want to go deep in every competition. We still have one game to reverse the situation and there is still hope for us."

  10. Can Chelsea recover to stay on course for first Women's Champions League title?published at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

    FT: Man City 2-0 Chelsea

Chelsea have won the Women's Super League in each of the past five seasons, but have never won the Women's Champions League, losing 4-0 to Barcelona in the 2021 final.

Sonia Bompastor replaced Emma Hayes as boss in the summer and Chelsea are unbeaten in the Women's Super League, eight points clear at the top.

But Bompastor still believes her side can salvage the Champions League in next Thursday's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

  11. 'Miedema is an unbelievable talent'published at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

Former Manchester City striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Once you unleash Vivianne Miedema in that second half, it is phenomenal.

She's unbelievable. 31 goals on 35 games in the Champions League is outrageous.

She's just an unbelievable talent and to have someone that world-class in your team is a joy to have.

It was two pieces of quality from Miedema and that's why she's one of the world's best.

This kind of result has been coming for Chelsea. They have not really performed that well since the winter break. Hopefully (from my perspective) this is a wake-up for the Chelsea players.

Manchester City goalscorer Vivianne Miedema, speaking to BBC Sport: "It’s such a tough game. We lost on Saturday [against Chelsea] and we used that as extra motivation. Champions League nights at the Joie have been pretty special so far so I’m really happy that we got the 2-0 win.

"You always want to start but I am not in a position where I can play four lots of 90 minutes in a row. We need to be smart and I’m happy today it worked out the way I wanted it to work out. I am happy with today.

"I love playing the big games. It’s a special competition. Having the fans here as well, it was a special night. Hopefully we can take this one a bit further."

On being the first team to beat Chelsea: "We respect them so much. They have been unreal again this season. We still have to play each other two times. It’s going to be really difficult but I think we can get a lot of confidence from this game."

On what Nick Cushing has done so far: "He really wants us to play forward and take risks. At times we did that really well today. We missed a lot of big chances on Saturday but showed we have worked on it in training and hopefully we can take it to another level on Sunday and Thursday."

Manchester City inflicted Chelsea's first defeat of the season as Vivianne Miedema's double gave them a crucial advantage in a pulsating Women's Champions League quarter-final tie.

Defeat ended the visitors' 31-game unbeaten streak - stretching back to last May - and was Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor's first with the club since joining from Lyon.

Substitute Miedema made the difference for City after coming on at half-time, taking her Women's Champions League goal tally to 31 in 35 games.

The Dutch striker thumped the ball into the roof of the net from close range for the opener on the hour mark, and confirmed victory with her second in the 88th minute.

It meant City got instant revenge for Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Women's League Cup final at Pride Park.

The hosts were the stronger side in the second half and deserved their reward, having built pressure and tested Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton with shots from distance.

Women's Super League leaders Chelsea did not offer much going forward until late and were wasteful when they did get into good positions. Their best opportunity fell to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd when she struck the crossbar, before Wieke Kaptein's strike was pushed away by goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.

Chelsea have work to do in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, 27 March (20:00 GMT) as they continue their quest to win four trophies this season.

The victory was a significant one for City interim manager Nick Cushing, who returned to the club eight days ago to replace Gareth Taylor and has shown he can get the best out of this team.
