Strategically the team that plays at home first should have an advantage, because they still have all the energy and the backing of the home crowd to help them smash the visitors, so that the next game with both teams much more tired is just a formality.

As an Arsenal fan, I can see us outplaying Real Madrid over both legs, missing loads of chances and eventually being sucker punched by a late goal, poor refereeing decision or even penalties. Real always seem to find a way to win despite being second best.

Can someone explain why one tie is a Wednesday one week and Tuesday the next? Both teams have a day less than the teams in the other ties. Surely if the first leg is a Tuesday, the second leg should be the following Tuesday?

  4. Gallagher goal sparks wild celebrationspublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Atletico 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-2, 2-4 pens)

It only took Conor Gallagher 27 seconds in the second leg to level the tie between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at 1-1.

And the dream start, courtesy of the England international, sparked wild celebrations among the Atleti faithful.

However, it proved to be the only goal of the game, with the night ending in disappointment for the home side, as their city rivals won 4-2 on penalties.

  5. Champions League or Sunday League?published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Lille 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (agg 2-3)

Watch as Julian Ryerson's corner kick creates havoc during the Champions League last-16 tie between Borussia Dortmund and Lille.

It all begins with Julian Brandt's header, which tested Lille keeper Lucas Chevalier before Serhou Guirassy and Brandt had further chances during the pinball that ensued.

Guirassy did not add to his 10 Champions League goals yesterday but was once again influential as the Bundesliga side continued their good run in Europe.

  6. 'He won't want to watch that again'published at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Lille 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (agg 2-3)

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced an absolute howler to concede after only five minutes of their second leg at Lille.

Jonathan David did not make the best of connections to Ismaily's cross but it was enough for the ball to slip through the legs of Kobel and into the goal.

However, goals from Emre Can and Maximilian Beier saved his blushes as last season's beaten finalists set up a quarter-final tie against Barcelona with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

  7. Is Raphinha a Ballon d'Or candidate?published at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Barcelona 3-1 Benfica (agg 4-1)

Is former Leeds United winger Raphinha in contention to win the next Ballon d'Or?

With a double in Barcelona's 3-1 win against Benfica, the Brazilian took his goals tally to 11 and now the top scorer in this season's Champions League.

And former England defender Stephen Warnock, speaking on Match of the Day, says it will be a toss between Raphinha and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah for the prestigious prize if Barca go on to become champions of Europe this season.

  8. 'What a player! What a moment!'published at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Barcelona 3-1 Benfica (agg 4-1)

Barcelona's Lamine Yamal scripted Champions League history this week in style in the La Liga side's 3-1 win against Benfica.

With a magnificent curling effort from the edge of the box in the 27th minute, he became the youngest player to score and assist in the Champions League, aged 17 years and 241 days.

  9. Given 'unconvinced' by Donnarumma heroics against Liverpoolpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

Gianluigi Donnarumma was blamed by many for Paris St-Germain's first-leg defeat to Liverpool as he allowed Harvey Elliot's 88th-minute effort to slip in.

But at Anfield, he became their hero, making not one but two brilliant saves in the penalty shootout to send his side through to the quarter-finals.

However, former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given was not fully convinced by the PSG shot-stopper's display against the Reds.

Pleased the Gunners were positive last night, and great to see a couple of good performances from Sterling and Zinchenko. Was forced to switch to the Madrid game in the second half by my son but good decision and enjoyed seeing that one go to the wire. Looking forward to the Real game already.

  12. 'Close to fifth Champions League spot'published at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

The Premier League is close to sealing a fifth Champions League place next season.

Arsenal and Aston Villa advancing to the quarter-finals of this season’s competition and results elsewhere means the English top-flight remains in a strong position at the top of Uefa’s European Performance Spot table.

Their present co-efficient tally of 23.035 can now only be caught by Spain, who are currently second, and Italy, who are third.

However, Italy only have four teams left in European competition, three of whom - Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina - play this evening.

Should England get one of the two available places, it would be regarded as an additional spot.

In theory, that could mean a potential seven English teams in the Champions League next season.

That would only happen if either Tottenham or Manchester United won the Europa League to qualify automatically and either Arsenal or Aston Villa won the Champions League while finishing outside the top four in the Premier League.

  13. 'I know what I am capable of' - Sterling on his MOTM performance against PSVpublished at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Arsenal 2-2 PSV (agg 9-3)

Raheem Sterling returned to the Arsenal starting XI last night against PSV and produced a stand-out performance with two assists.

"I know what I am capable of," said the former Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea forward after becoming the first English player to either score or claim an assist in the Champions League with four different clubs.

"You just want to be playing. You are at a top club with top players and you just have to wait for your moment. And that is what I am doing."

Sterling also sounded a rallying cry for his Arsenal team-mates following a difficult run that has seen them slip 15 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.

"Yes we are a few points behind, but there are all different circumstances [for that]. I think the boys have done really well and in the last bit of the season [are ready] to give it a right push."

  15. What is still to come?published at 12:43 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

There are three Premier League news conferences this lunchtime, so we will soon be switching focus from the Champions League.

West Ham boss Graham Potter and Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo are due to face the media at around 13:30 GMT, with Brentford's Thomas Frank to follow at 15:00.

We are not finished with European competition quite yet, though, with four British teams in European action tonight.

We will be building up to this evening's Europa League fixtures featuring Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers, as well as Chelsea's Conference League tie against Copenhagen.

Hi, Tom's point (12:17) is reasonable on the face of it, but rather loses its strength considering that both of the ties that went to penalties this week were won by the away team. Maybe having the home leg first is the way to go.

    Jeremy in Manchester

There you go Tom, Uefa's complicated procedure for the quarter-final draw could actually work in your favour!

  19. Uefa's quarter-final explanationpublished at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Champions League

Here is how Uefa explain the quarter-final draw on their website:

"The draw started by shuffling and then drawing the balls placed in the first bowl of the silver side of the bracket. The first ball drawn from this bowl indicated the team which will play the first match of the quarter-final at home, and the second ball the team which will play the return leg at home.

"The procedure was repeated with the remaining bowls to complete the quarter-final pairings."

Remember the point at which you glazed over during the preamble for the Champions League draw?

We all feel your pain on this one - but that was probably the point at which Uefa explained who would play at home in the second leg of the quarter-finals.
