When a keeper saves a pen despite having their feet in front of the goal line, a goal is not awarded, the ref asks for the pen to be retaken. Makes sense. Why then, when a penalty taker slips and allegedly touches the ball twice but scores, does this get instantly regarded as a miss? Why not ask for it to be retaken?

  2. Why was Alvarez's penalty disallowed?published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (2-2 on agg, Real win 4-2 on pens)

This one is going to be talked about for years to come.

Julian Alvarez's "double-tap" penalty - just why was it disallowed?

Former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock and goalkeeper Shay Given discussed the reasoning alongside Gabby Logan during Match of the Day's Champions League highlights show.

The outcome will be bitterly disappointing for Atletico after they had produced a brilliant defensive display for the majority of the match to limit Real to few chances.

They had made a dream start when England international Gallagher stabbed in following a rapid Atletico attack down the right, making history as the first Englishman to score in a Madrid derby.

Real could barely fashion a chance after that against a well-organised and disciplined home side, who had not lost a knockout tie at home since Ajax beat them in 1997.

At the other end, the lively Alvarez was denied three times by Thibaut Courtois.

Frenchman Kylian Mbappe had been kept largely quiet, but the one time he got free of his markers he burst through and won a penalty as he was brought down inside the box by Clement Lenglet.

Vinicius Jr, who had scored all of his previous seven penalties for Real, stepped up with the chance to put Real ahead in the tie once again with 20 minutes to go, but the Brazilian smashed his effort well over the bar.

There was nothing to separate the sides after that in a tense derby and Real, who beat Atletico in the 2014 and 2016 finals, maintained their 100% record against their fierce rivals in penalty shootouts to progress.

Football suffers from constant application of the letter of the law, rather than the spirit of it. That isn't even a double touch because his striking foot is in contact with the ball the whole time while it glances the top of his left foot.

    Neil in Bolton

Alvarez double touch was clearly unintentional. On that basis it seems harsh that the penalty can't be retaken, much like when the keeper isn't on their line.

  9. Holders through to last eight on penaltiespublished at 07:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-2, 2-4 pens)

Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez had a penalty dramatically ruled out in the shootout as Real Madrid edged out their city rivals to reach the quarter-finals.

They will face Arsenal in the last eight, having kept alive their hopes of winning a record-extending 16th Champions League trophy.

Neither side could find a winning goal before the end of extra time after Conor Gallagher's strike - just 27 seconds into the game - had levelled the tie on aggregate after Real's 2-1 first-leg win.

That meant penalties were needed to determine the outcome and, after the first three had been converted, former Manchester City forward Alvarez stepped up to take Atletico's second.

He slipped while taking it, but the ball ended up in the back of the net. While it was initially given, the successful spot-kick was subsequently ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR), with Alvarez having been deemed to have touched the ball twice as he struck his effort.

Fede Valverde converted his penalty to put Real 3-1 ahead and although Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved Lucas Vazquez's spot-kick to briefly give Atletico hope, Marcos Llorente hit the bar.

Antonio Rudiger then stepped up to squeeze home the decisive penalty to send Real through by a 4-2 margin.

  10. Dortmund fight back to beat Lillepublished at 07:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Lille 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (agg 2-3)

    Marissa Thomas
    BBC Sport

Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat Lille and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The French hosts took a fifth-minute lead when Jonathan David swept a first-time finish through the legs of the unfortunate Gregor Kobel.

It put Lille 2-1 up on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the away leg in Germany.

But, having come close several times, Dortmund hit back in the second half and levelled in the 54th minute when captain Emre Can converted a penalty after Thomas Meunier nudged Serhou Guirassy in the box.

Maximilian Beier then headed narrowly wide, but made amends in the 65th minute, firing into the roof of the net from Guirassy's pass.

Canada forward David had a chance to level the tie and send Lille into the last eight of the competition for a first time, but his close-range effort was well saved, while Hakon Haraldsson's dipping strike was pushed over the bar by Kobel.

Niko Kovac's Dortmund side will now face La Liga giants Barcelona next month.

  11. Arsenal set up Real tie with big aggregate win over PSVpublished at 07:43 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Arsenal 2-2 PSV (agg 9-3)

    Steve Sutcliffe
    BBC Sport

Arsenal completed a resounding 9-3 aggregate victory over PSV Eindhoven to set up a mouthwatering Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Leading 7-1 from the first leg in the Netherlands, the Gunners took the opportunity to make wholesale changes to their starting XI.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who has found himself on the periphery at times, picked up possession from Raheem Sterling's touch inside and whipped a superb effort into the left corner.

However, any thoughts of the floodgates opening and Arsenal eclipsing Bayern Munich's record 12-1 thrashing of Sporting over two legs at the same stage of the competition in 2008-09, did not come to fruition.

Former Tottenham winger Ivan Perisic expertly found the top-right corner from Guus Til's pass to give the visitors a deserved equaliser.

And while Myles Lewis-Skelly hit the post for the home side at 1-1 and a brilliant Sterling run and cross from the right allowed Declan Rice to head Arsenal back in front, they were unable to pull clear.

PSV, who were backed by a spirited away following, restored some pride when Couhaib Driouech collected Isaac Babadi's incisive pass to chip over the oncoming home goalkeeper David Raya and ensure they left London with a merited draw.

The two games between Villa and Liverpool in the league this season were excellent and the score lines didn't really reflect how close those games were. This makes me think Villa might surprise a few people against PSG, not saying they will win it but I think they will give them a good game!

  13. Villa cruise past Club Bruggepublished at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Aston Villa 3-0 Club Brugge (agg 6-1)

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Aston Villa completed a comfortable passage into a Champions League quarter-final with Paris St-Germain after cruising to victory against Club Brugge at Villa Park.

Unai Emery's side were in prime position as they protected a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Belgium, putting the tie out of the reach of the visitors following the half-time introduction of on-loan talisman Marco Asensio.

A risk-free first 45 minutes was only notable for Club Brugge defender Kyriani Sabbe's 16th-minute red card for hauling back Marcus Rashford as he chased keeper Emiliano Martinez's long clearance.

Asensio, outstanding since his arrival from PSG, secured Villa's passage into the last eight five minutes after coming on with a neat finish from Leon Bailey's clever pass.

Ian Maatsen added the second from close range seven minutes later, his first for the club, following good work by Morgan Rogers, then Asensio added his second and Villa's third after 61 minutes. It was a simple finish set up perfectly by Rashford.

Pleased Arsenal got through last night with little drama, no new injuries, not pushing too hard. Loved seeing Tierney getting some minutes, a very underrated player who deserves more game time. The next CL will be a big step up and I don’t think we will make it past Real Madrid, but it’s the only competition that matters now.

We have to start at Villa Park though, where Unai Emery's side - inspired by winter window signings Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford - made it past a talented Club Brugge side to seal a place in the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition for the first time in 42 years.

Next up is Paris St-Germain - Emery's former side and the current paymasters of Spanish loan signing Asensio.

Champions League rules mean the 29-year-old forward is cleared to play against PSG.

Marco Asensio took his tally to seven goals in five matches for Aston Villa as he came off the bench to score a second-half double for Unai Emery's side against 10-man Club Brugge.

The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder scored either side of a close-range strike from Ian Maatsen to seal a 3-0 win at Villa Park, which completed a 6-1 victory on aggregate to set up a quarter-final against Liverpool's conquerors Paris St-Germain.

Arsenal, meanwhile, completed a 9-3 aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven at Emirates Stadium, following a 2-2 draw on the night.

They will now face Champions League holders Real Madrid over two legs in the last eight next month after the Spanish champions beat city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties.

And Borussia Dortmund, last year's beaten finalists, set up a quarter-final against Barcelona after coming from behind in Lille to win their last-16 tie 3-2 on aggregate.
