What will happen in tonight's Champions League fixtures?

I thought that it was going to be more sort of half and half, but it seemed that there were a lot more fans not happy with him going on the field.

He had to expect it and for Liverpool fans I don't think it was abusive, even if he was emotional.

With Trent, in his prime, he has left the club and yes fans are entitled to feel emotional about it. They commit everything - their whole life, their bedrooms and living rooms - to the football club and expect players to stay there.

As long as it wasn't abusive, I think it's fair game for a bit of booing. It didn't affect Trent, not that he was on the pitch long enough to really have an impactful performance, but I am all for that.

I think it's obvious our best midfield is the trio from last season, Mac, Grav & Szobo, as they run up and down the pitch helping both ends making us more solid. With the additions we made, it should be our frontline we experiment with to fit in the new boys.

  3. Trent 'will deal with it - he is a mature man'published at 09:49 GMT

Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was booed by large sections of the Anfield crowd after being sent on in the final 10 minutes of the game by Xabi Alonso.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague did not have a problem with the Real Madrid manager's decision to open him up to abuse from the Reds supporters and believes he was effectively telling him to "deal with it".

"He was just basically a player that was needed at that point," Balague told 5 Live Breakfast. "He has just come back from an injury. He has been on the bench a couple of times, he needs to get minutes.

"Obviously it was at Anfield, there is going to be noise as well. 'OK - deal with it' is basically what he [Alonso] was saying to Trent.

"Before the game he was smiling, obviously he felt tense, it didn't feel natural, perhaps, to be playing in a white shirt. But he has taken the decision to move that way. Many people don't like it and you can argue about that, but he will deal with it. He is a mature man."

Conor Bradley was driven by the full force of Anfield's adoration, while Trent Alexander-Arnold – the local boy who left Liverpool behind - was given a brutal and hostile reminder of his fall from grace.

Bradley was earmarked as Alexander-Arnold's heir apparent from the moment he announced his decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid, so once the fates paired the two European superpowers together in the Champions League, the stage was set.

And what a contrast it was as the 22-year-old Northern Ireland right-back was the shining symbol of a Liverpool display that harked back to their Premier League title-winning best as Real Madrid were swept aside.

Alexander-Arnold, who started on the bench, all the while was left in no doubt how the fans who once sang about 'the Scouser in our team' now regard him.

  7. English teams excelling in Champions Leaguepublished at 09:25 GMT

    Noel Sliney
    BBC Sport

Three wins out of three last night, and all with clean sheets, maintained the early Champions League dominance by English sides as the league phase nears the halfway point.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham occupy one of the top-eight spots that guarantee automatic qualification for the last 16, with Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea all seeking to join – or replace – them by winning tonight.

English teams have averaged 2.3 points per game in the Champions League this season, far exceeding any of the other nations with three or more sides in the competition.

Success breeds success, with England currently well clear at the top of Uefa’s co-efficient rankings, which are based on results across the three European competitions and determine which two leagues will earn an additional Champions League spot for next season.

  8. 'Liverpool outrun and outsmarted Real Madrid'published at 09:19 GMT

    Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

In the last seven games played between English and Spanish teams it is 6-1 to England, with 14 goals scored to only four from the Spanish sides, so you are edging it.

[Liverpool's] 1-0 [win] did not reflect what was happening. It was [goalkeeper Thibaut] Courtois who saved Real Madrid.

Liverpool outrun and outsmarted Real Madrid, quite clearly. They dictated what happened in every phase of the match. It was a superiority that was a little bit surprising.

I can't remember many times Kylian Mbappe really running in behind Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate, or even trying to make a run in behind.

Vinicus had a few goes at Connor Bradley but I thought he was absolutely outstanding. He didn't get much help off Salah. One v one against one of the best wingers in the world, he was absolutely flawless.

  11. Liverpool's dominance highlightedpublished at 08:58 GMT

    Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

It would be tough to argue against the suggestion that Tuesday evening was Liverpool's strongest performance of the season so far.

From back to front, they finally looked like the Premier League champions that they are.

It was a dominant display and Real Madrid have goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to thank for making the scoreline look respectable.

Arne Slot's side put up an xG (expected goals) tally of 2.51 - the most by far that the Spanish side have been on the receiving end of in this year's Champions League.

An xG map for Liverpool against Real Madrid

Contrast that to the xG map of Real Madrid and it really shows just how tough they found it at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

Xabi Alonso's side had produced an xG of at least 2.5 in all of their previous three matches in this season's Champions League but were limited to just 0.46 by the Reds.

They only managed to get three shots off from inside the box in the 90 minutes as they struggled to lay a glove on a dominant Liverpool defence.

It was the first time in all competitions this season that Real have failed to find the net.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Very pleased. It's been [some] tricky weeks for us, many away games, hardly any rest in between every single game.

"Again, we only had two days in between this game but the same was there for Real Madrid. It helps if you can play in front of these fans and you can play in front of Real Madrid because I think that brings the best out of my players and out of our fans.

"A great performance against a team that only lost once all season. It could have been a bit more maybe."

Arsenal fan here but hearty congrats to all the English sides last night. Only PSG can stop an English side winning it. Madrid being the overhyped lazy team I remember from last year confirmed that. Only negative for me is Arsenal conceded a shot on target! Standards are clearly dropping!

Conor Bradley is getting plenty of plaudits for his performance against Real Madrid - and rightly so.

The right-back, just as he did in last season's Champions League fixture against the Spanish giants, barely put a foot wrong.

He was able to nullify the threat of Vinicius Jr all evening and help the Reds to a second successive clean sheet in all competitions.

Following the game, he posted some images on Instagram with the caption: "Enjoyed that one! Thank you Anfield".

And his team-mates have been quick to respond in the replies, including fellow right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who is currently out injured.

Frimpong wrote: "Talk about locking someone," with a couple of side-eye emojis added on.

Wonder who he could be talking about...

It’s a huge step forward for Liverpool. Now it's about drip feeding in your newer players but they have to have come to terms with how Liverpool play and why they were successful last season.

The back four were outstanding and the midfield - wow what a performance that was from the guys in midfield. It was really impressive.

Conor Bradley has long been regarded as the heir apparent to the vacancy left behind by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the 22-year-old Northern Ireland defender showed exactly why with an outstanding display.

Liverpool's fans revelled in Bradley's physical battle with Vinicius Jr, chanting his name to the echo while reserving their fury for the local boy who left Anfield behind.

Bradley's progress has been curtailed by injuries, but he was the symbol of a Liverpool display which carried all the old intensity and creation that deserted them during their recent run of losses.

Dominik Szoboszlai was outstanding in midfield, only denied by the brilliance of Thibaut Courtois, while match-winner Alexis Mac Allister's return to form in the past two games has also transformed a side that looked lost earlier this season.

Liverpool's defence never yielded to Real at any point, and it was only when Courtois was at his defiant best that it looked like the Reds might not get the win that pushes them up into sixth in the table, a standing that would earn them automatic passage into the last 16 without the need for a play-off.

    Champions League

A host of former European champions and big names face a tough challenge to qualify for the knockout stages.

With half of their games played, Italian champions Napoli are in 21st place on four points after a frustrating goalless draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Marseille - who won the Champions League in 1993 - are 22nd, with three points from three games, and two-time European champions Juventus are 23rd, on three points after four.

Meanwhile, bottom two Ajax and Benfica, who boast six European titles between them, will be hoping to earn their first points of the campaign when they play tonight.
