He may be a rival player to Liverpool, but I will always love Jordan Pickford’s audaciousness and determination to win, also his hilarious methods to distract penalty takers when he’s up against them, he also shows a lot of passion and spirit whether he’s playing for Everton or England.

    Jack

If I could have any England goalkeeper it would be Pickford, to protect Liverpool's ACLs twice a year. I'd then loan him out to Tranmere.

James Trafford has rejoined Manchester City in a deal which Burnley say is a record transfer for a British goalkeeper. Sources at City have indicated the deal is worth an initial £27m plus add-ons, while Burnley have briefed that the figure is £31m plus add-ons.

The record was last set in 2017 when Jordan Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland for £25m, with an additional £5m due in add-ons. Given Pickford has made over 300 appearances for the Toffees, also winning 76 England caps, it is safe to assume most, if not all, of his performance-related payments have been triggered.

Only four Premier League keepers have cost more than Pickford and Trafford. Chelsea paid £71.6m to activate Kepa Arrizabalaga’s release clause at Athletic Club in 2018, which remains a world record. However, the Spaniard struggled to justify that fee and eventually moved to Arsenal this summer for just £5m.

Alisson also arrived for big money in the summer of 2018, moving to Liverpool from Roma for an initial £56m, but has proved an outstanding long-term investment. The Brazilian’s success at Anfield, where he has won six major honours, means add-ons will have taken his final fee to almost £67m.

Andre Onana has endured mixed fortunes since leaving Inter for Manchester United two years ago for an initial £43.8m. Meanwhile, Trafford’s new City team-mate Ederson is the league’s fourth most expensive goalkeeper, having cost £34.7m when he joined from Benfica eight years ago.

  4. England’s fight for the number one shirtpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 30 July

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport

"For the first time in a long time, Jordan Pickford could be facing serious competition going into the World Cup," said BBC Radio 5 Live’s Ian Dennis in June.

Pickford, 31, has enjoyed a seven-year spell as England’s number one and with 76 international appearances he is the Three Lions second-most-capped men’s goalkeeper behind Peter Shilton.

The Everton stopper has started 76 of England’s 100 matches since his debut in 2017, including 15 of the previous 17. But the form of other players and a change of manager has potentially threatened his role in the national team.

England boss Thomas Tuchel promised a “fight for every position” and namechecked two goalkeepers who could challenge Pickford for the gloves – Dean Henderson and James Trafford.

Henderson, 28, inspired Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory in May and put in a number of top class performances last season, preventing a total of 9.3 goals while keeping 15 clean sheets. He made no errors leading directly to goals and saved two of the three penalties he faced, including one from Omar Marmoush at Wembley.

Manchester City’s latest signing Trafford amassed 29 clean sheets and conceded just 16 times during a record-breaking campaign with Burnley. He prevented a remarkable 12.85 goals and saved almost 85% of the shots he faced last term in the second tier.

So Man Utd could have Pope playing behind [Ayden] Heaven? Surely that has to happen - even if it requires divine intervention!

    Rich

As a Man Utd fan, I'd be happy with Pope. Not the best with his feet, some say. Onana didn't light up the world with his skills last season either, but Pope is by far the better shot-stopper.

Newcastle's need for a new goalkeeper may be exacerbated by rumours surrounding the future of Nick Pope, their current number one.

Pope, 33, might be a target for Manchester United if Newcastle complete a deal for Aaron Ramsdale.

That's according to Talksport, external, who say that Pope - out of contract at St James' Park next summer - fits the bill as a keeper who can challenge Andre Onana to start at Old Trafford.

    BBC Radio Newcastle

BBC Radio Newcastle's Simon Pryde on fan reaction to Aaron Ramsdale: "The reaction to this news is mainly negative. But that might be down to the general frustration of Newcastle fans having only made one signing this transfer window. They have missed out on a lot of top targets.

"I understand the reaction to an extent, but I have always admired Aaron Ramsdale when I have seen him play over the years."

  9. Newcastle 'desperate' for another keeperpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 30 July

    Newcastle United

Former Magpies defender John Anderson on BBC Radio Newcastle: "It is obvious that Newcastle want another goalkeeper.

"Ramsdale has been mentioned in questions with Eddie Howe for a while now. The Trafford deal seemed to drag on forever and everybody just expected that deal to happen, I certainly did. Then all of a sudden, Manchester City came along and gazumped it.

"Ramsdale is the right age for a goalkeeper and is coming into his prime at 27. Newcastle seem desperate to get another goalkeeper. There are already so many on the books as it is, so whether they are not convinced about Nick Pope, I'm not sure.

"Pope played well in pre-season but we all know he is not the best with his feet. He has had some issues but he does the job.

"The goalkeeper basically becomes an extra defender so Newcastle need to have someone who doesn't just stop the ball going into the back of the net. The goalkeepers at Liverpool and Manchester City are all very comfortable with their feet."

If I could have any England GK it would be Dean Henderson. I’m a Palace fan and we have Dean Henderson. He saved a penalty to help win us the FA Cup. We love Dean Henderson.

  11. Who are England's goalkeeper options?published at 14:12 British Summer Time 30 July

Whisper it quietly, but England's men have a lot of strength in depth these days.

Manchester City's new signing James Trafford is thought to be the future number one for Thomas Tuchel's side.

Trafford is uncapped for the England senior team but has been a regular for the U21 team and has won the Euros at that level.

The current number one for England is Jordan Pickford. The Everton star has 76 caps with 37 clean sheets. He won his first cap in 2017 and since then he has represented his nation at two World Cups and two Euros, reaching the knockout stages at each tournament and the final at both Euros.

England's other options between the sticks are Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson. Pope has 10 caps, Ramsdale has five and Henderson has three.

Ramsdale isn't a bad signing for Newcastle, but you can understand Isak's frustration. Despite Newcastle's season last season, they've not managed to get the pull they wanted. With the Champions League and the Premier League getting harder, they might struggle if things don't turn around quickly.

Defeat for Newcastle in Suwon, but the bigger concern will be Joe Willock, who was stretchered off in the second half after a heavy challenge.

Jin-Gyu Kim's first-half strike proved the difference in a game where the Magpies never quite found their rhythm. A disappointing result, but all eyes are now on Willock’s condition.

  14. Willock stretchered offpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 30 July

    Team K League 1-0 Newcastle (90 mins)

Big concern for Newcastle as Joe Willock is stretchered off following a heavy challenge with Cessinha.

The midfielder looked in real discomfort and couldn’t continue. He’s replaced by Alfie Harrison, with Eddie Howe no doubt hoping for positive news after what appeared to be a painful ankle injury.

With so many English keepers seemingly on the move, we want to know which stopper you would like your team given the opportunity.

Would you prefer the aerial ability of Nick Pope or the distribution of James Trafford? How about the shot-stopping of Aaron Ramsdale?

Alternatively, would a different English keeper fit the bill better - Jordan Pickford? Dean Henderson? Jack Butland?

  16. Triple change for Newcastlepublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 30 July

    Team K League 1-0 Newcastle (80 minutes)

Newcastle make three changes as Emil Krafth, Sandro Tonali, and Nick Pope make way.

Harrison Ashby, Travis Hernes, and Max Thompson come on as Eddie Howe looks to inject some fresh energy into the side. Still 1-0 to Team K League.

  17. How does Ramsdale compare to Newcastle's goalkeepers?published at 13:40 British Summer Time 30 July

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport

When Nick Pope started against Italy at the San Siro in September 2022 he became the first Newcastle goalkeeper to win a senior England cap for 121 years. Three years later and the Magpies could now have another England international stopper on their books.

But Newcastle fans could be forgiven for any apprehension around potentially signing a goalkeeper who has suffered relegation from the Premier League with three different clubs.

Ramsdale was in the Southampton side that went down with 12 points last term and he also dropped out of the Premier League with Sheffield United in 2020-21 and Bournemouth in 2019-20 - and even endured a League Two demotion while on loan at Chesterfield seven years ago.

The 27-year-old conceded 66 goals and kept three top-flight clean sheets in a disastrous 2024-25 with his numbers understandably below average due to playing behind such a porous defence.

His experience cannot be questioned, however, and he has 183 Premier League appearances to his name – only 38 fewer than current Newcastle number one Pope.

Ramsdale's Premier League career profile is similar to Eddie Howe's back-up keeper Martin Dubravka – both are less accomplished shot stoppers than Pope but more accurate passers.

Dubravka did well when called upon last term but he will turn 37 in January and the opportunity to sign a player almost 10 years younger with comparable ability could prove to be shrewd business.

No breakthrough yet in the second half - it’s still 1-0 to Team K League.

Newcastle are pushing to find a way back, but the hosts remain resilient so far. The game is heating up as both sides look for that crucial moment.

Newcastle have opened talks with Southampton to sign England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Negotiations are at an early stage as Newcastle seek to bring Ramsdale in either on loan or a permanent deal.

However, Championship side Southampton are known to prefer a permanent sale on substantial terms having signed the England international for an initial £18m from Arsenal in August 2024.

It follows Newcastle agreeing a £27m fee with Burnley to sign James Trafford last week only for Manchester City to activate a matching rights clause and set up a deal to re-sign their former academy graduate.

Ramsdale, who was last called up by England in March, would also get the opportunity to remain in the Premier League, where he made 30 appearances last season as Southampton finished bottom and were relegated with just 12 points.

We will continue to bring you updates from Newcastle's pre-season friendly, but now we also return to the topic of transfers.

James Trafford may have completed his move to Manchester City yesterday - but he is far from the only English keeper potentially making a switch this summer.

Speaking of Newcastle, they missed out on signing Trafford and are looking at a compatriot as an alternative...
