Luis Diaz played and scored for Liverpool against Bayern Munich in a pre-season friendly in Singapore in August 2023. Bayern won the match 4-3

It is easy to see why Luis Diaz is an attractive prospect for Bayern Munich.

Diaz's shot conversion rate of 18.3% in 24-25 comfortably ranked as his best in a Premier League season.

Many of his other attributes stood out statistically too.

Diaz sat just outside the top 10 in the Premier League for most combined goals and assists (18), shots on target (30), chances created (56) and dribbles completed (52).

His defensive attributes and work-rate are also evidenced by the fact he won possession in the final third on 22 occasions, more than any other Liverpool player relative to their time spent on the pitch.

I love Luis Diaz's directness and flair, but his finishing and decision-making could be a bit off. To make a serious profit off a 28-year-old with two years left on his deal is a great piece of business, aside from any help it could have with Isak.

    Josh

A real shame Diaz has left, but he seemed determined to go. There appeared to be a breakdown between him and Liverpool. Still would rather have kept him than Gakpo.

  7. What number will Diaz wear for Bayern?published at 09:16 British Summer Time 30 July

Luis Diaz had the number 7 for Liverpool, but Serge Gnabry wears that for the Colombia international's new club.

    Breaking

Luis Diaz with the Premier League trophy

    Big breaking transfer news...

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has joined Bayern Munich in a deal worth 75m euros (£65.5m) including add-ons with Liverpool.

The Reds had rejected an initial bid of £58.6m from Bayern for the Colombia forward earlier this month.

Diaz, 28, was left out of Liverpool's squad for Saturday's 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat by AC Milan in Hong Kong because of speculation surrounding his future. He had been given permission by Liverpool to fly to Europe from Asia to complete a medical in the coming days.

Liverpool have signed forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike already this summer and are interested in Newcastle United's Alexander Isak.

Diaz arrived at Anfield from Porto in a deal worth an initial £37m in January 2022 and has scored 41 goals in 148 appearances, including 13 as the Reds won the Premier League title last season.

His 17 goals in all competitions in 2024-25 was the most prolific season of his career.

I like Trafford as a keeper, and it seems like a good buy for Man City. It seems odd that they sold him and re-bought him rather than just loaning him out to develop for a few years. I'm surprised James Beadle hasn't received more interest after the Euros.

Manchester City insert buy-back clauses when they sell players, yet tend not to activate them when those academy products move on.

But this is an example of why they put them in the deals, as it has proven helpful in the ability to buy back a talented player on this occasion.

Having served an impressive apprenticeship at Turf Moor, City believe they can develop James Trafford into a top goalkeeper - one who is already ready for the Premier League.

However, the club now have the dilemma of moving on either Ederson, who is entering the final year of his contract, or Stefan Ortega, who has now slipped a place down the pecking order.

  12. Will Trafford play this season?published at 08:51 British Summer Time 30 July

James Trafford is the fourth goalkeeper at manager Pep Guardiola's disposal, with Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli already at the club.

Trafford will challenge Brazil's Ederson, who has been first choice for eight years, for the number one spot.

Ederson is in the final year of his contract and has been linked with a move to Galatasaray, but last month described rumours of a departure as "99% fake news".

City have not received any bids for the 31-year-old, but there are doubts about the future of German Ortega given the increased competition for game time Trafford's arrival will bring.

  13. 'Trafford will succeed for Man City and England'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 30 July

    Manchester City

Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana on James Trafford: "James is already one of the most accomplished young goalkeepers in the English game, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City.

"He has all the attributes a top-class goalkeeper requires.

"We fully believe he will be really successful and a top goalkeeper for Manchester City and the [England] national team."

  14. 'This is the place I call home'published at 08:40 British Summer Time 30 July

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, speaking to the club website yesterday: "Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family.

"I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City. This is the place I call home - it's a truly special football club.

"I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving - and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be."

  15. How does Trafford compare to City's goalkeepers?published at 08:34 British Summer Time 30 July

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport

James Trafford conceded just 16 league goals with Burnley last term and 29 clean sheets in the Championship.

He also set a new divisional record of 12 consecutive shutouts between December and February before he was finally beaten in a 2-1 victory at Cardiff City at the start of March.

But despite his stellar performances in the second tier last season, Trafford lacks a degree of top-flight experience and only 28 of his 153 senior appearances have been in the Premier League.

Trafford's shot-stopping is undoubtedly first rate and his save percentage stands at almost 85% last season.

That figure far exceeds the numbers posted by both Ederson and Stefan Ortega, although Trafford was largely facing inferior opposition at Championship level.

But he will have to develop his distribution if he is to fit into Guardiola's side and system as his pass completion of 70% is comfortably lower than that of Manchester City's current goalkeepers.

That is partly because Burnley opted to go long more often - averaging 55 long passes per game compared to City's 36 - and partly because Ederson and Ortega are more proficient at playing out from the back.

  16. Why have Man City signed Trafford?published at 08:27 British Summer Time 30 July

    James TraffordImage source, Getty Images

City academy graduate Trafford, 22, signed for Burnley for up to £19m in July 2023.

He impressed last season as Scott Parker's side won promotion back to the Premier League - keeping 29 clean sheets across 45 Championship games - and was named in the division's team of the year.

City had a buy-back clause for Trafford and also matching rights, allowing them to equal any offer from another club.

They moved for the player following a £27m bid from Newcastle - and Trafford opted for a return to Manchester.

He made 73 appearances for Burnley, including 28 in the Premier League in the 2023-24 season.

Trafford has represented England from under-17 to under-21 level, and was part of the winning European Championship squad of 2023, during which he did not concede a goal.

He received his first senior international call-up in 2024 but has yet to make his debut at that level.

  17. Trafford rejoins Man City for 'British record fee'published at 08:20 British Summer Time 30 July

    Manchester City

Goalkeeper James Trafford has rejoined Manchester City from Burnley in a deal which the Clarets say is a new record fee for a British goalkeeper.

City sources say the move is worth £27m plus add-ons.

However, Burnley sources put the figure at £31m plus add-ons and a sell-on clause.

That would take the deal above the previous record of £30m which Everton paid Sunderland for Jordan Pickford in 2017.

Announcing his departure, Burnley said "the move to City is a record transfer fee for a British goalkeeper and a club record sale".

He has signed a five-year contract with the option for another year at Etihad Stadium, and will wear the number one shirt.

    The Daily Mail

The Daily Mail report that Manchester United are interested in moves for Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko as they aim to sign a new striker.

United are said to be planning a £45 million bid to Aston Villa for England international Watkins, who turns 30 later this year.

RB Leipzig's Sesko is younger than Watkins, but is likely to be much more expensive.
