  1. Palmer's Premier League stats since joining Chelseapublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 9 October

Premier League goals and assists table

Cole Palmer's form this season is a continuation of what he produced in his debut campaign at Chelsea following his move from Manchester City last summer.

Since the start of 2023-24, Palmer has either scored or assisted 44 goals, more than anyone else in the Premier League.

While Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has scored considerably more goals with 37 compared to 28 for Palmer, the Chelsea forward has chipped in with more than triple the amount of assists - 16 compared to five for Haaland.

"You can't leave Cole Palmer out of any team, and I am talking about England too," former Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He is so gifted, he will have that awe around him so that players are afraid of him. If he continues like this, he is going to be a legend of the Premier League."

  3. Palmer named England men's player of the yearpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 9 October

    England

One of the reasons that Jack Grealish missed out on England's Euro 2024 was because of Cole Palmer's form last season, and his former Manchester City team-mate has been named the England men's player of the year for 2023-24.

Voted for by the public, the Chelsea forward was picked ahead of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, who finished second and third respectively.

Palmer only made his debut for the Three Lions in November last year - in a 2-0 win against Malta at Wembley.

He has represented his country nine times, starting a game twice, with five of those appearances coming at Euro 2024, where he scored in the final against Spain as Gareth Southgate's side lost 2-1.

The recognition comes after he was named PFA young player of the year for 2023–2024 in August, following his superb debut season at Chelsea.

Who does Jack Grealish think he is? A permanent bench-warmer at City and is lucky to be playing under Pep and with this impressive City team and goes to ground every 5 seconds. Palmer starts over him every day of the week for the next 5 years.

  5. 'Why Alisson injury blow doesn't fill me with worry'published at 09:58 British Summer Time 9 October

    Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson BeckerImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool fan writer Jordan Chamberlain on losing Alisson Becker to injury: For any other club, losing Alisson would be a massive blow. After all, he is probably the best goalkeeper on the planet.

But in Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool have arguably the world's most impressive back-up stopper - and the Irishman will not let anyone down now that Alisson is set for an extended spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

It almost felt unfair of Liverpool to keep Kelleher in the summer. He is 25 years old and obviously deserving of a starting spot in a Premier League side.

I would argue he has been better than the keepers starting at Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea. Maybe only Arsenal and Manchester City have keepers who would start ahead of him of all the sides in the top flight.

So while Alisson's injury is a blow, it doesn't fill me with worry. It also makes the deal Liverpool completed to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer make more sense.

The Georgian was an expensive signing, but a pretty unexciting one - given he went on loan to Valencia for the year and because he plays in Alisson's position.

Most Reds would prefer Alisson stays between the sticks for the next five seasons, but his abnormal ability to pick up so many injuries as a keeper means we need an elite deputy.

Kelleher has fulfilled that role but he won't do it forever. He is too good. Mamardashvili hopefully is too, but perhaps will be happy to learn from Alisson for one season before taking the reins full-time in 2026-27.

Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker is expected to be out until at least mid-November with a hamstring injury.

The Brazil international suffered the issue in the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace last Saturday when he was replaced by Vitezslav Jaros after 79 minutes.

Liverpool do not expect Alisson to be back this side of the next international break, which takes place following a round of league games over the 9-10 November weekend.

Prior to that, the Premier League leaders face top-flight matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and Aston Villa, while they play RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and Brighton in the League Cup.

Reds keeper Caoimhin Kelleher missed the game at Palace through illness but is expected to replace Alisson.

“It is quite clear then that he (Kelleher) is the number two,” said Liverpool boss Arne Slot following the game at Selhurst Park.

“Otherwise, the last time Alisson was injured I would have played Vit, but I played Caoimhin. So Caoimhin is the number two and did really well.”

Kelleher came in for Alisson when the 32-year-old had a spell out in September and played in a league win against Bournemouth and League Cup victory against West Ham.

Delighted to see that Jurgen will be back in football in the New Year. Liverpool fans were heartbroken he left the club that loves him, but he's too influential a figure for him to be away from football for too long. I just hope the FA try to get him for England at some stage.

More from England defender Levi Colwill, who could start at left-back against Greece, on Lee Carsley: "I think the lads really like him. I do and I can only really talk about myself. I trust him and we'll see what happens in the future.

"He's a very calm person. I think he brings that to the team.

"An amazing person and a strong-minded manager. He knows how he wants to play and how it matches the players we've got.

"He has a bit of arrogance about the team and himself, in terms of, 'we've got the best players in the world', and we all believe that. We can take that next step to winning a huge competition."

"I've got a very good relationship with him, there's a lot of trust in there.

"He's an amazing person, an amazing manager and I've got no bad words to say about him because he has won me an Under-21 Euro Championship, he's picked me for two camps, so he's an amazing person, an amazing manager."

The European Clubs' Association is handing out some awards this morning. One of them is its commercial development award.

Tottenham have won it for the way they have grown various commercial streams in their new stadium outside of football, via the NFL, concerts and an F1 karting track underneath the stadium.

Chairman Daniel Levy says the work is aimed at growing the club's fan base, creating more revenues and making a greater impact in the local community.

Two NFL games will again be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, with the Minnesota Vikings beating the New York Jets last Sunday and the Chicago Bears set to 'host' the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday.

  13. European clubs meeting in Athenspublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 9 October

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

I have come over to Athens for the European Clubs' Association General Assembly.

The ECA is increasingly powerful on the global football scene. Other than Real Madrid and Barcelona, who remain on the outside as a legacy of their continuing involvement in European Super League, all Europe's major clubs are represented amid a growing membership of more than 700.

Manchester United chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc is here, flying in after attending his club's significant board meeting in London on Tuesday.

I have also bumped into former England and Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson and seen Graham Potter, who appeared on both Sky and Match of the Day last week, and Edin Terzic, the highly-rated former Borussia Dortmund boss who stood down after reaching the Champions League final last season.

"In his role as head of soccer, he will be a game-changer for our involvement in international soccer and its continued development."

  16. I should have been in England's Euros squad - Grealishpublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 9 October

England v Greece (Thu, 19:45 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester City's Jack Grealish believes he should have been part of England's Euro 2024 squad and "can't speak highly enough" of interim manager Lee Carsley.

Grealish, 29, was "devastated" after being omitted from Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the tournament, in which England lost to Spain in the final.

However, Carsley has started the City playmaker in both games he has overseen since replacing Southgate on a temporary basis.

"I will be honest with you - I didn't really agree with it," Grealish told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Grealish admitted he felt he "didn’t have the best season" for his club, but added: "You need a bit of a balance in every position on the pitch and I class myself [as] quite an experienced player now.

"I have won a lot of stuff now so, you asked me should I have gone, yes, I still think I should have, but obviously it wasn’t meant to be."

"The role may have changed but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not."

It also took a minority stake in Championship side Leeds and became the club's front-of-shirt sponsor earlier this year.

Red Bull says Klopp will not be involved in day-to-day operations but will advise teams on playing philosophy, transfer strategy and coaching development.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate's successor - interim boss Lee Carsley - has brought Jack Grealish back into the England squad after he was left out for Euro 2024.

On whether he felt he had a point to prove on his return for September's internationals, Grealish told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Of course, I wanted to come here and train well and play well.

"I thank the manager Lee Carsley for giving me that chance and having that trust in me.

"It obviously really meant a lot, I think throughout my career when I have played under managers who have shown trust in me and communicated with me the way he has the last two camps, it really helps me.

"It makes me feel that the manager really does rate me and I can't speak highly enough of him since I have been here."
