Tottenham do have previous in this competition, but in its previous guise as the Uefa Cup.

Spurs were the first ever winners back in 1972 - they beat Wolves 3-2 across two legs - and won the competition again in 1984 against Anderlecht. Both legs finished level but Spurs prevailed on penalties.

Since the competition’s rebrand to the Europa League, the furthest Spurs have got is the quarter-finals.

Tottenham have played in three other major European finals.

They won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963 and lost in one other Uefa Cup final, in 1974.

More recently, Mauricio Pochettino's side were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final.

More than 80,000 Manchester United and Tottenham supporters are expected to descend on Bilbao before tonight's Europa League final, but which set of fans will be travelling home happy?

BBC Sport have spoken to a fan from each club to ask them which side they believe will lift the trophy and why.

Tottenham supporter Anna Howells from Spurs XY, said: "Tottenham Hotspur are going to win the Europa League final, simply because it means more to them, it means more to us, more to the fans, it means more to the players. I honestly think this could be our year."

Meanwhile, Manchester United supporter Dale O'Donnell, from United In Focus, argued: "Manchester United are going to win the Europa League because I think they are going to go into the final with more experience playing on that big stage and more know-how in finals, they know how to get over that hurdle."

    • Bordeaux to Bilbao on a bus arriving at 5am this morning
    • Day pass at the gym for a shower, "well worth the 10 euros"; 10 minutes in a massage chair
    • And now out for the day in Bilbao
    • Match tonight then 2am bus to Madrid; Madrid flight to Porto
    • Porto to Manchester, back in at 1.55 pm tomorrow…"and then there’s a school pick-up!"

    Good luck.

I'm on a cruise ship off the coast of Greece, waiting to hear if the captain will put the game on the big TV or if I will have to keep track of it on the BBC app. 10pm kick off here, so maybe midnight celebrations/tears on deck.

Still thousands arriving in Bilbao, set-off times seem long forgotten, the main thing is to be here for an enormous game for both sides.

These lads arrived at 7am in the city centre, parked in the car park beneath the fan zone then straight up for the Europa League final experience.

Steve Davis drove all the way from Leeds, picked up his son James, who had an exam that morning, and set off at 1pm. Their mate Graeme Keast got the train across from Warrington and they headed off… long drive and then to their city centre hotel wisely booked in September for just £88. That’s a very early win.

I imagine Ange is gone no matter what happens, his tactics are fine in lesser leagues but not with the big boys. I would give Amorim another year if he wins.

Tottenham fan Emma de Duve says it has cost her £300 and taken 13 hours to travel from London to Bilbao.

"I'm not sure that it is going to be worth it - I've had a season ticket for 20 years and I've only seen one trophy in my life so I'm really hoping that this is going to be number two," adds Emma, who has travelled to the final with her dad and sister.

Emma said they booked their accommodation nearly a year ago when Spurs qualified for the competition.

That is what you call serious planning ahead.

Manchester United fans were brimming with confidence as they jetted off to Spain for their all-English Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Married couple Jim and Linda Baughan, who have followed the Red Devils for 40 years, said they had paid £5,000 for travel and match tickets.

"As we said in Moscow [in the 2008 Champions League Final] it was worth every rouble," said Linda.

Another United fan Bob Firth said: "It is not going to be a cheap two days but it will be worth it - Tottenham always bottle it."

Father and son Andy and Sam Warburton were less bullish.

Andy said: "I'm nervous, you never know which United you will get - I do know Ruben Amorim is the best man for the job and the club should back him next season."

BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter in Bilbao

I was due to arrive Monday, missed my connection, had a night at Amsterdam Airport, was awake at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning for a flight to Madrid and then another flight to Bilbao.

Just to give you an insight as to how busy Bilbao Airport is going to be, there is actually going to be a record 268 flights coming into Bilbao, but there are 700 between Tuesday and Thursday.

If there are any connections missed, there are going to be a lot of people stranded, as I can certainly testify to.

Over land and sea is what many Manchester United fans refer to their unwavering support of their football team.

Bilbao Airport is set to welcome 268 flights today, but some fans have opted for a coach journey.

James Young told BBC Radio 5 Live he got a "10-hour coach from Paris," not for the faint-hearted.

However, to soften the blow of a 10-hour journey, James said, "Bilbao is a great city, the locals are welcoming, the food is brilliant, and the beer is cheap!"

As a personality, I think Ange Postecoglou is a breath of fresh air, I’ll acknowledge his Premier League season has been poor and even after the big injury crisis, things didn’t get to where they should. But he’s been more disrespected in articles than any other I’ve seen. The guy has worked his way through Asia, to Scotland, to the Premier League, which is an amazing achievement, and all the media have done is make him feel unwelcome and often miserable. Whatever happens, I’m a fan of big Ange!

Alfie Watts won BBC One's Race Across the World last year and no surprise the Spurs fan has made it to Bilbao.

This time he was allowed to spend what he wanted. Stansted to Santiago de Compostela then a drive of six hours to Gorliz where he’s staying about 45 minutes out and then into Bilbao this morning.

No prizes for this yet but he told me he’d happily give up last year's win to see his side lift a trophy.

    Tottenham are fairly predictable.

They press aggressively, and they often attack with seven players, which is not normal for any Premier League team.

Maybe that's a contributing factor to why they pick up injuries. This isn't PSG, this is a team which is below the worst United league season in 50 years.

But Tottenham have beaten United three times this season!

Manchester United officials are juggling game related queries with keeping across wider matters.

The reports they are getting back indicate any incidents involving supporters have been minor, that co-operation between Greater Manchester Police, the Metropolitan Police and local law enforcement has been good and the atmosphere is generally good natured.

I was chatting to someone earlier who suggested local police were privately quite happy Athletic Bilbao didn’t make it to the final as it would be easier to control two lots of travelling fans.

It's sunny, just like Mancunian weather!

Manchester United are in the process of a redundancy scheme.

It is a shame because people are losing their jobs and no one at Manchester United wants that to happen.

To have this financial boost, an estimated £100m if they qualify for the Champions League would be significant for them.

  20. 'A lot of disrespect towards Postecoglou'published at 11:16 British Summer Time 21 May

Tottenham v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

So, what do Spurs fans think about Ange Postecoglou's "spiky, prickly press conference"?

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Spurs fan Chris Cowlin said: "There's a lot of disrespect towards Ange Postecoglou" after the Standard reported the Spurs' boss was "teetering between hero and clown".

"There shouldn't be any negativity around Tottenham the day before such a huge game for the football club," said Cowlin.

"Yes, it has been a rough season, but this is a huge game for the football club."

It has been 17 years since Spurs last won a trophy - the League Cup in 2008 - and 41 since they lifted European silverware.

"It shouldn't be about Ange Postecoglou. It should be about the football club trying to deliver success," added Cowlin,

"Ange does need to defend himself and the players, but I feel there's been a lot of disrespect."
