Lens are set to host Sevilla for a European game for the first time. They have a 100% win record against Spanish sides on home soil, beating a different team on each occasion: Atlético de Madrid (4-2, March 2000, UEFA Cup), Celta de Vigo (2-1, March 2000, UEFA Cup), Deportivo de La Coruña (3-1, October 2002, Champions League) and Osasuna (3-1, November 2006, UEFA Cup).
Sevilla have lost just one of their seven UEFA Champions League matches against French clubs (W3 D3), a 2-1 home defeat against Lille in 2021-22; they are unbeaten on French soil (P3 W1 D2).
Victory for Sevilla will see them reach the play-off round for the UEFA Europa League, while any other result will see them finish bottom of their UEFA Champions League group for the very first time.
Since losing 2-1 to Arsenal in the UEFA Cup in April 2000 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, Lens have lost just two of their last 26 matches in all European competition on home soil (W20 D4), although they’ve only kept six clean sheets in that run and none in their last 10.
Sevilla are winless in their last nine away matches in the UEFA Champions League (D6 L3), having won three of their five before this (D2). They have drawn 41% of their away games in the competition (13/32), the highest percentage of any side to play 15+ games away from home.
Lens suffered their biggest ever European defeat last time out, going down 6-0 at Arsenal. However, at home the French side have scored in each of their last 35 matches in all European competition, since a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the 1996-97 UEFA Cup.
Sevilla remain winless in the UEFA Champions League this season (D2 L3), losing their last three in a row. Only four Spanish teams have ever failed to win a single group stage match in a single campaign in the competition – Deportivo de La Coruña (2004-05), Atlético de Madrid (2009-10), Villarreal (2011-12) and Real Sociedad (2013-14).
Sevilla are the team with the oldest average age of their starting XI in the UEFA Champions League this season (30y 197d). Indeed, their XI against PSV last time out was the oldest named by a team in a game in the competition’s history (32y 19d).
Lens are the team who’ve had the highest percentage of their total touches come while under pressure from the opposition in the UEFA Champions League this season (72%). Indeed, their pass completion rate when under pressure is just 76%, ranking them 26th out of 32 teams in this category.
Youssef En-Nesyri could become Sevilla’s all-time top scorer in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, with the Moroccan striker currently level with Wissam Ben Yedder on 10 goals.
