Here's what our chief football news reporter, Simon Stone, said back on May 15 about Rashford's future...

Marcus Rashford will return to Manchester United, at least for pre-season, as there has been no negotiations with Aston Villa regarding the possible extension of the forward's future.

The player's camp do not believe current United head coach Ruben Amorim wants to restore the player to his squad, while minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously spoken about his frustration at some of the team's highest earners not being on the pitch.

The simple truth is if Rashford sticks to his guns over his wages – and his United contract does not run out until 2028 - very few clubs in the world could afford him.

It means United have to offer an incentive to negotiate a sale, through a reduced fee or offering to pay a portion of his wages or both.

  2. What are Rashford's stats for last season?published at 12:57 British Summer Time

Marcus Rashford started last season involved in Manchester United's team under Erik ten Hag.

During the first half of the season Rashford made 24 appearances for the club and scored seven goals.

However, after Ruben Amorim was appointed as Ten Hag's permanent replacement, Rashford's minutes dried up. He was exiled from the first team in December after a reportedly falling out with the manager.

The 27-year-old was then loaned to Aston Villa and during that time he scored four goals from 17 games.

  3. What has Rashford won with Man Utd?published at 12:52 British Summer Time

Since making his senior debut in 2015, Marcus Rashford has won five major honours with Manchester United.

He has won the FA Cup twice, the EFL Cup twice and the Europa League.

  4. Rashford's time at Man Utdpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time

Marcus Rashford joined Manchester United's academy in 2005 and made his senior debut for the club in 2015.

In 2016 Rashford became the youngest scorer in the Premier League era when he scored against Manchester City. He was 18 years and 141 days.

He was a consistent performer for the club until the 2021-22 season, when his form took a dip. But he found his scoring prowess once again the following campaign, scoring 30 goals from 56 appearances in all competitions.

However, a tricky relationship with manager Ruben Amorim saw him loaned to Aston Villa for the second half of last season.

  5. What has Amorim said about Rashford?published at 12:44 British Summer Time

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim criticised Marcus Rashford publicly on multiple occasions after exiling him in December because of his attitude.

More recently, Amorim said he does not regret loaning Rashford to Aston Villa.

He said in April: "We lack a lot of things in the team. We saw with Milan in the past, a lot of problems – big teams that when you get inside [the club and understand], in one context, it’s really hard. And in January we lost Rashford and Antony and we didn’t bring new ones – was a risk.

"But there are things here that are more important than to score 10 more goals this season. We are trying to do something that is more important. We can hurt the squad now, but in the future it is going to help the club. So we are on that path."

  10. How did Reijnders do on his Man City debut?published at 12:13 British Summer Time

    Man City 2-0 Wydad Casablanca

This touch map gives you an idea of what Tijjani Reijnders will bring to the Manchester City team.

The Netherlands midfielder had 82 touches against Wydad Casablanca, most of them coming between the two boxes. Covering so much space demonstrated his athleticism and he also made some vital interceptions.

City had 67.6% possession so many of Reijnders' touches came around the halfway line and in Wydad's half. He anchored the City midfield during the first hour before moving into a more advanced role when Rodri was introduced.

Reijnders attempted 74 passes and completed 68 of them. The six he failed to complete were all passes in or into the final third.

  11. How did Cherki do on his Man City debut?published at 12:05 British Summer Time

    Man City 2-0 Wydad Casablanca

Rayan Cherki played in a more advanced role than Tijjani Reijnders, with most of his 35 touches coming between the centre circle and Wydad's penalty area.

He also popped up more often on the right wing than on the left and forced an error from the Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid in the 54th minute, which handed Jeremy Doku a clear chance, but Benabid made amends by saving Doku's shot.

Cherki showed some neat touches in the final third but generally struggled to find space in the City midfield, which was highly congested. As demonstrated by the average player position graphic below, Cherki's average position was virtually the same as those of Phil Foden and Savinho. In his 60 minutes on the field, Cherki attempted 27 passes, completing 20 of them.

  12. Where did Reijnders & Cherki play for Man City?published at 11:58 British Summer Time

    Man City 2-0 Wydad Casablanca

Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both made their debut for Manchester City during their Club World Cup win over Wydad Casablanca.

The average position for both was quite central, with Netherlands international Reijnders (number 4) pulling the strings in midfield and playing a little deeper than Cherki (number 29). The France international was deployed in a more advanced attacking role before being replaced by Erling Haaland on the hour mark.

Speaking to Channel 5, City boss Pep Guardiola said: "Tijjani Reijnders played really good, Rayan Cherki played in good moments."

Myles Lewis-Skelly was called up to the England squad for the first time by manager Thomas Tuchel for March’s World Cup qualifiers and scored on his debut from left-back against Albania at Wembley.

In doing so, he became the youngest England debutant to score at the age of 18 years and 176 days and tops an illustrious list which includes the likes of Jimmy Greaves and Sir Stanley Matthews:

    • 18 years, 176 days - Myles Lewis Skelly v Albania
    • 18 years, 209 days - Marcus Rashford v Australia
    • 19 years, 16 days - Tommy Lawton v Wales
    • 19 years, 86 days - Jimmy Greaves v Peru
    • 19 years, 124 days - Joe Baker v Northern Ireland
    • 19 years, 240 days - Stanley Matthews v Wales

“He’s a fantastic football player,” said England manager Tuchel after his debut. “If you see him in the possession games in training, the level of first touches, the quality of first touches, the quality of the body movement, how he opens up his body and where he plays the passes. A very high understanding of the game comes very naturally to him.”

The 18-year-old won his third England cap in the friendly defeat to Senegal nine days ago.

Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly was one of the big talents of the 2024-25 season and while the defender is still in his teenage years, that hasn't stopped European giants Real Madrid sniffing around in the hopes of getting a bargain in the future.

But is Lewis-Skelly ready to snub Real in favour of staying with the Gunners? That looks the more likely option.

According to the Athletic, , externalthe 18-year-old is close to signing a new contract with Arsenal, one that would make him one of the best-paid young players in the world. And Lewis-Skelly keeps it in the family when it comes to negotiations, as his mother, Marcia Lewis, is his representative.

People are being extremely quick to pile on Gyokeres. He was told he would be allowed to leave for a low fee this summer, so long as he didn't look for a move last summer, and that agreement isn't being honoured. Sporting's president has a long history of using the media to advance his agenda, but don't buy in.

    Tim, Devon

I understand some of the frustration with Gyokeres, but a lot of it seems a bit harsh in my opinion. He could’ve left Sporting in January but instead helped them to go on and win the league. If they did have a gentleman’s agreement then I can understand his frustration!
