Breaking every record has not been enough - Arteta

So close, but yet so far – and the mood was defiant.

Mikel Arteta, in his heart of hearts, may have known Arsenal’s title race was run before this match. As Pep Guardiola’s former assistant, he knows as well as anyone just how ruthless Manchester City can be.

It was certainly over when City raced into an early lead against West Ham, on a day when they had to not win for Arsenal to have a shot at a first league title in 20 years.

So by the post-match interviews at Emirates Stadium, Arteta and his players had time to come to terms with second place – and to draw positives from an impressive campaign.

Arsenal finished on 89 points, their second most in a Premier League campaign. Only the 90 earned by the legendary Invincibles side of 2003-04 can surpass this Gunners team.

West Ham are set to appoint Julen Lopetegui as their new manager later this week.

The former Spain and Real Madrid coach was identified as the Hammers’ first choice to replace outgoing boss David Moyes.

Now the Premier League season is over, Lopetegui’s contract will be signed, allowing him to take over for the start of pre-season, which includes a two-week trip to the United States for matches against Crystal Palace and Wolves.

Ironically, Lopetegui spent the second half of the 2022-23 season with Wolves, guiding the club to safety. However, he left on the eve of the new campaign after issues over transfer funding failed to get resolved.

Moyes revealed after yesterday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City that he has already received job offers but is likely to spend some time with his family after getting only three weeks off last summer.

The Scot has agreed media commitments with BBC Sport and TalkSPORT at this summer’s European Championships.

As a Utd fan I wish it was us winning the league but I have nothing but admiration for what City have done. If only Utd had went for Guardiola all them years ago, the guy is a cut above.

While Manchester City celebrated, Arsenal missed out on a first Premier League title since 2004 despite beating Everton.

To be crowned champions, the Gunners needed to beat the Toffees and hope City failed to win against West Ham.

Arsenal suffered a setback when Idrissa Gueye's deflected free-kick put Everton in front, although Takehiro Tomiyasu equalised three minutes later.

While Arsenal did eventually hold up their end of the bargain with Kai Havertz's late winner, ultimately City's victory over West Ham took matters out of their hands.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The conversation has started over on BBC Radio 5 Live, with the first hour of Nicky Campbell's phone-in - from 09:00 to 10:00 BST - devoted to the question: "Are Manchester City untouchable?"

City fan Natalie Pike kicked off the chat by admitting that the whole thing - becoming the first side to win four consecutive Premier League titles - just feels "a little surreal".

"It will take a while to sink in," she said. "We still have the FA Cup final as well. Four titles, no-one has ever done it. At the moment it all feels a little surreal."

Some interesting moves on display here...celebrating is something Manchester City have become accustomed to, but clearly not much practice has been put into the dance routines.

I was going to say that Strictly may not come calling, but if former Arsenal captain Tony Adams can make it on there then there could be hope yet for Haaland and co.

Yesterday's results mean England's European places will not be confirmed until after next Saturday's FA Cup final.

If Manchester United win, they will join Tottenham in the expanded group phase of the Europa League, which will have eight games, and Chelsea go into the Conference League play-offs, which take place in August, and Newcastle will miss out.

If Manchester City win, Chelsea will join Tottenham in the Europa League, Newcastle will go into the Conference League play-offs and Manchester United will miss out.

It would be only the second time since English clubs were re-admitted to UEFA competition in 1990 that Manchester United had failed to qualify for any European tournament.

Manchester City's domination of the domestic game is now so all-consuming that a historic fourth successive Premier League title is treated like an inevitable matter of routine.

City went into the final game of the season ahead for the sixth time in seven seasons needing only a win over West Ham United to lift the crown once more - and they duly delivered.

In doing so, Pep Guardiola's all-conquering team once again proved they are the great untouchables of the Premier League.

They appear impervious to normal pressures - and the fact they have rewritten the record books will barely provoke excessive comment or deep-dive analysis. It was expected. The seismic shock would have been failure to complete their mission.

I don't think anyone's denying Man City's or Pep's brilliance, but there isn't the same feeling of the rivalries of the past, like Arsenal and Man Utd in the early 00s. Utd had the financial clout, but nobody questioned where that came from.

A year ago, when Manchester City were going for the Treble, Phil Foden wasn't even a starter.

Even though it was his most successful season individually, he wasn't the most important part of that.

The fact that Kevin de Bruyne was out at the start of this season meant that he had an opportunity.

And if we are going to talk about people taking an opportunity, when you are walking away as Player of the Season and are second top scorer for your team...

Even in the game yesterday, the fact that he scored first and it was so early, the crowd was going wild.

So fair play to him, he is the boy that is doing very well for his hometown club.

  12. 'I'll never get bored of it' - Fodenpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 20 May

Midfielder Phil Foden said "we've put ourselves in the history books" after his Manchester City side won a record fourth successive Premier League title.

Foden scored twice on the final day to extend City's unbeaten home run to 44 games in all competitions.

"It's so hard to put into words what we’ve done," said Foden after the game.

"We've put ourselves in the history books. No team has ever done it. You see what it means to the fans and what it means to us. Working all year for this moment, it’s such a special feeling to share it with the fans.

"Now we can say we are the first team to do it. I'm lost for words.

"I'll never get bored of it," he added. "I want this feeling every time. When you win something there is no better feeling and I just want to keep winning as much as I can."

It is going to be hard for Arsenal and Liverpool fans to not think about that weekend when they both lost on the Sunday - Arsenal losing at home to Aston Villa and Liverpool at home to Crystal Palace.

City at that point where in third, and even though they were winning so were the other two teams.

The moment they were given a chance to be able to make the most of a slip-up, they definitely did it.

On reflection, it was very tight. They know that this Arsenal side had a very good year and they are going to be very good for a few years, it feels like.

I, and other people, may be tired and annoyed by City’s monotonous form, but Arsenal have shown that they’re not a title-winning team yet. They were given so many opportunities to jump ahead but tripped up each time. Gutting for them but these are the standards!

  16. What are the punishments if Man City are guilty?published at 08:19 British Summer Time 20 May

One important question remains, what will happen to Manchester City if they are found guilty of any or all of the 115 charges?

    This is the great unknown.

The independent commission's powers are limitless.

This means City could be kicked out of the Premier League or have a massive fine imposed – or both.

Alternatively, they might suffer a huge points deduction imposed at a specific time, including at the start of a new season.

However, any of these require a guilty verdict. Clearly, City argue they are innocent and nothing should happen.

  17. Man City charges timelinepublished at 08:16 British Summer Time 20 May

So how did we get to this point? Here is a timeline of Manchester City's case:

    • November 2018: Football Leaks allegations emerge, with Der Spiegel publishing claims Manchester City breached FFP rules
    • March 2019: Uefa launches a formal investigation off the back of Der Spiegel's findings
    • May 2019: City criticise the investigation and launch appeal process
    • November 2019: Cas deems City's appeal inadmissible
    • February 2020: Uefa announces a two-year ban from European competitions and a 30m euros fine for the club
    • July 2020: City's European ban overturned after Cas appeal
    • July 2021: City lose a jurisdiction ruling which allows the media to report the Premier League is continuing to investigate the champions for alleged financial breaches
    • April 2022: German newspaper Der Spiegel publishes a fresh report claiming the Premier League has been investigating the club for three years, providing detailed claims
    • Feb 2023: Premier League charges City with 115 financial breaches
    • Autumn 2024: Reported date of a potential PSR legal trial between the Premier League and City
    • Summer 2025: Reported date of a verdict on the trial related to 115 charges.

Nobody can deny City’s achievement- Pep has built a quality team and is the best manager of his age. However, he isn’t the GOAT, he’s nowhere near SAF. And I have to say, until this business of the 115 charges is sorted, each title they win has an asterisk next to it.

  19. When will the Man City hearing take place?published at 08:08 British Summer Time 20 May

The honest answer is no-one knows and of course the findings of the case will only be punished if they’re found guilty.

There have been reports a hearing date is in place for the autumn of 2024, with the same reports suggesting a decision by the summer of 2025 – still more than a year away.

City have neither confirmed nor denied this. However, the case will be detailed and the arguments multi-faceted.

City have already been largely successful in winning a similar case with Uefa - they were fined 10m euros by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) when they overturned a two-year Champions League ban imposed by European football’s governing body, largely for non-compliance with rules.

The club accepted the Cas ruling because they said they didn’t trust Uefa. However, a number of allegations were dismissed because Cas ruled they were time-barred.

The same rules do not apply in the Premier League.

  20. Breakdown of the charges Man City are facingpublished at 08:04 British Summer Time 20 May
