Newport County and Fleetwood Town had to settle for a share of the spoils after a game of many chances but ultimately no goals in south Wales.

Fleetwood had the ball in the net within the first quarter but Mark Helm was adjudged to be offside.

Newport should have taken the lead when Aaron Wildig was brought down inside the box by David Harrington but the goalkeeper made amends, saving with his legs to deny Bryn Morris from the penalty spot.

The near misses continued as the opening half drew to a close, with Fleetwood's Helm hitting an upright before team-mate Mackenzie Hunt grazed the top of the crossbar with a free-kick.

The second half was a more cagey affair, although Fleetwood had to hack off the goal line when Harrington fumbled a corner.

At the other end Tommy Lonergan could not get a volley on target when in a good position, while Nick Townsend produced a vital save with his right foot to deny Carl Johnston a late Fleetwood winner.

Both sides remain mid-table in League Two, with Newport 14th on 19 point and Fleetwood a place below them with 17 points.

'This game deserved goals'

Newport County manager Nelson Jardim said:

"I think it was a fair result, a point is a point and it helps us to go in the right direction.

"I know we missed a penalty but taking into account the game and the chances we created, they created as well, I think at the end of the game a point is good for both teams.

"But this game could have gone either way, so I'm happy... this game deserved goals - at least two per team."
