  2. 'We thought Mbappe's tournament was over'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

    BBC Radio 5 Live

French journalist Julien Laurens has been discussing Kylian Mbappe's chances of playing against the Netherlands on Friday after breaking his nose against Austria.

"We thought maybe his whole tournament was over," said Laurens. "That was how bad he was when he left the stadium to go to the hospital around 11, still bleeding and we thought uh-oh this is really the bad news of the night if France lose him, it's obviously a disaster for France but also the tournament. He's the biggest star!

"The first diagnosis was positive he has broken his nose but not as bad as we thought originally, he doesn't need surgery and he's hoping to play against the Dutch.

"It's a massive game and it's a different game, Austria were great but the Dutch are a level above, certainly in terms of talent but for me the key will be in midfield, we often say that when previewing matches but yesterday N'Golo Kante thirty-three year-old, two have the performance that he had, two years after last playing for France in a competitive match is incredible.

"The Dutch have a really young midfield, they're good but they don't really have many caps or experience in these types of tournaments. France have Griezmann, Kante and Rabiot and that should make a difference."

  3. 'I was about to celebrate'published at 13:05 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

    BBC Radio 5 Live

French journalist Julien Laurens said that he was already prepared to celebrate before Kylian Mbappe missed a massive chance in the second half against Austria.

On Mbappe's missed chance: "I was about to celebrate in the stadium, I had such a perfect view of it, where I was in the stadium and I knew exactly what he was going to do, he was going to curl it that way, we've seen it so many times."

  5. 'France don't play sexy football'published at 12:55 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

    BBC Radio 5 Live

French journalist Julien Laurens has been talking about France's win over Austria, Kylian Mbappe and the Netherlands

On France's performance against Austria: 'We were saying yesterday morning that it would be tricky. We said in the pre-match show that it would not be easy for the French because Austria play well. They press high, they play with a lot of intensity and at this level not a lot of teams run everywhere and put you under a lot of pressure like Austria, certainty for a lot of the game

"I think the French were ready, they were disciplined they were quite serious and structured and they still had quite a lot of changes to score a second goal. Mbappe missed a big big one at the start of the second-half of course. So overall I think they would be very happy with the way the game went, and don't forget we don't play sexy football, you know that, but we win."

  6. Mbappe not fully fit?published at 12:50 British Summer Time 18 June

    BBC Radio 5 Live

French football journalist Julien Laurens has spoken to BBC Radio 5 Live about Kylian Mbappe's match fitness: "If you think about how many minutes he has played since February with PSG, because when he announced that he was leaving they benched him for most of the second half of the season, I don't think he's fully match fit.

"But yesterday he said something really interesting, 'physically I'm not there, it's mentally that I'll be able to have a good tournament '."

Mbappe's night ends with a nasty injury and a booking

Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during France's opening game at Euro 2024 but will not need immediate surgery.

The French Football Federation said a mask will be made for their captain, but it is not yet known if he will play against the Netherlands on Friday.

The 25-year-old forward was forced off during Monday's 1-0 win over Austria after his face hit opponent Kevin Danso's shoulder in the follow-through from an aerial challenge.

He was taken to Dusseldorf hospital where the break was confirmed.

"He has returned to the base camp of the French team," the FFF said.

"He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately."

OK, the publication of next season's Premier League fixtures has drawn attention away from the Euros.

Let's redress that balance now by returning to this morning's top story - Kylian Mbappe's broken nose...

  15. Possible Goodison farewell/FA Cup final clashpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 18 June

We mentioned earlier that Everton's planned final game at Goodison Park - against Southampton on Sunday, 18 May - could be moved if they were to reach the FA Cup final, which is scheduled to take place the day before.

Pete has been on to rightly point out that the same would be true if newly-promoted Southampton were to reach the final.

It is, of course, possible that they could both make it to Wembley - now what would be the odds of that happening?

As a Crystal Palace fan, the end of last season - supposedly a tricky run-in where we won 7 out of 8, shows the fixture order doesn't matter if you're playing well. The trick is to start well, and to keep all our players!

    Rob

Call me crazy, but I think Liverpool v Palace on the final day could be a title decider! If Palace can keep their young talents, who knows how far they can go? Dark horses for sure!

    Walt, Bletchley

People worry too much about the order of fixtures. My advice would be - much like when waiting for food at Wagamama - just take it as it comes!

  18. Challenge for title, win title, repeat...published at 11:41 British Summer Time 18 June

For much of last season there was a three-way title race in the Premier League, before Liverpool fell away and Manchester City eventually pipped Arsenal to claim a fourth consecutive crown.

Should those three teams find themselves competing for the title once again this season, it seems City could have the edge when it comes to the run-in.

Of Liverpool's final five games, four of them will be against sides that finished in the top half of the Premier League last season, while Arsenal face three. City will come up against just one of last season's top-half sides in their last five matches.

  20. Man Utd at home...againpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 18 June

    Manchester United

Manchester United have opened their past seven seasons in the Premier League with a home fixture.

Not since kicking off the 2016-17 season with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth have United ventured away from Old Trafford.

This year will make it eight in a row, as Erik ten Hag's side get the whole season underway with a home game against Fulham - on Friday, 16 August.

Generally, United have used the advantage well, winning five of their last seven opening fixtures, with their only defeats coming against Brighton in 2022-23 and Crystal Palace in 2020-21.
